、Designation: D4800 94 (Reapproved 2011)Standard Guide forClassifying and Specifying Adhesives1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4800; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A n

、umber in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This guide provides a classification system for tabulat-ing the properties of adhesives suitable for holding parts orassemblies together

、. The use of this guide also providesinformation necessary for the development of standard speci-fications for adhesives.NOTE 1This classification system may serve many of the needs ofindustries using adhesives. This guide is subject to revision as the needrequires; therefore, the latest revision sh

Material selection should be made bythose having expertise in the adhesives field after carefulconsideration of the design and the perfor

The generic family is identified by letterdesignations as found in Table 1.NOTE 2For example: CA = Cyanoacrylate.5.2.1 The generic family is based on the broad chemicalmakeup of the base materials. By its designation, certaininherent properties are s

、pecified.5.3 The generic family is classified into groups according,in general, to the chemical composition. These groups arefurther subdivided into classes and grades, as shown in thebasic property table that applies. The letter designation appli-cable is followed by a four-digit number indicating

、group, class, and grade.5.3.1 The basic property tables have been developed toidentify the commercially available adhesives into groups, classes, and grades. These tables are found in the standardslisted in Table 1.5.3.1.1 Where a standard does not exist for this classifica-tion system the letter desi

、gnation for the generic family will befollowed by four 0s and the use of the suffixes as needed (see7.1).NOTE 3Example: SI0000 indicates a Silicone (SI) from Table 1, with0000 indicating no basic property table.5.4 To facilitate the identification of new or special materi-als where basic property ta

、bles are not provided in a materialspecification, cell tables will be used. These tables shall appearin the material specifications. (See example of cell table in Fig.2.)5.4.1 Although the values listed in the cell tables include therange of properties available in existing materials, users shouldno

、t infer that every possible combination of properties exists orcan be obtained.5.4.2 The requirements for special adhesives will use theclassification system, as described, by the addition of a singleletter that indicates the proper cell table in which the propertiesare listed. A specific value is d

、esignated by the cell number foreach property in the order in which they are listed in the table. When a property is not to be specified, a zero is entered as thecell number. Likewise, when an acceptable value is notavailable in the cell table, the number 9 should be used and asuffix used indicating

、the specific value (see 7.1). Thus, theletter designation “A” for cell table and 3400 for propertyvalues shall always be written A3400.NOTE 4An example of an anaerobic adhesive identified by thisclassification system is as follows. The designation AN0120A3400indicates the following with the material
