10、 when in the experience and judg-ment of the purchaser, the nature of the articles or materialto be shipped justifies such containers.2.7.2 Exceptional commodities may require better contain-ers than are specified herein. Containers for explosivesand dangerous articles shall comply with the specific

11、a-tions prescribed in the Department of Transportations(DOT) Office of Hazardous Materials Code of FederalRegulations, Title 49 CFR Parts 107-180. In addition, forthe particular articles to which these regulations apply, ifthe requirements contained in this practice are morestringent, then they must

Significance and Use4.1 Triple-wall corrugated fiberboard containers are used tounitize products into containers of size and shape suitable formanual or

17、mechanical handling and to protect the contentsagainst environmental, handling, shipping, and storage condi-tions.4.2 This practice is intended to cover some of the basicconstructions and styles of commercially available triple-wallfiberboard packaging used to unitize and protect contents.5. Classif

18、ication5.1 Classes and StylesTriple-wall corrugated fiberboardcontainers may be furnished in the following classes, styles,and types of ends, as specified:5.2 Class:5.2.1 Non-weather-resistant containers are for domesticshipments and storage.5.2.2 Weather-resistant containers are for export shipment

19、sand storage where high humidities or extreme climatic condi-tions may be encountered.5.2.3 Fire-Retardant ContainersWhen specified, triple-wall containers shall use materials as specified in SpecificationD 4727.5.3 Style:5.3.1 Style ARegular slotted container or alternate con-struction (see Fig. 1)

20、.5.3.2 Style BFull telescope container (see Fig. 2).5.3.3 Style CHalf regular slotted container with short topflaps and cover or alternate construction (see Fig. 3).6. Ordering Information6.1 Purchasers should select the preferred options offeredherein and include the following data in procurement d

21、ocu-ments:6.1.1 Title, number, and date of this specification,6.1.2 Class and style of container (see 5.1).6.1.3 Inside dimensions (see 7.2),6.1.4 Special features for Style A, B, and C containers,6.1.5 Unless otherwise specified, packing and marking shallbe in accordance with Practice D 3951,6.1.6

22、Whether containers are to be shipped partly assembledor knocked down and in bundles,6.1.7 When pallet bases are required (see 7.6.3), and6.1.8 When gluing is permitted (see 7.5.1).6.2 Size and Weight LimitationsWhen size and weightlimitations of the carriers classification (see National MotorFIG. 1

23、Style A BoxD5168032Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification) areexceeded, a special package permit should be obtained, whenapplicable.7. Materials and Manufacture7.1 Materials:7.1.1 FiberboardThe fiberboard shall consist of threecorrugated mediums and four facings fabricated into a

24、triple-wall structural material.7.1.1.1 Corrugating Mediums:(1) Weight of MediumsThe weight of material used tofabricate the corrugated medium shall be no less than 26lb/1000 ft2(127 g/m2), or as otherwise specified.(2) Flute ArrangementThere shall be two A Flutes, withthe remaining flute being eith

25、er A or C Flute. Flute arrange-ment shall be agreed upon between the purchaser and thesupplier. In accordance with Department of Defense require-ments, the flute combination shall be C-A-A (or meet equiva-lent performance levels).7.1.1.2 FacingsThe combined weight of facings shall benot less than 26

26、4 lb/1000 ft2(1289 g/m2), with the heaviestfacings on the outside. For weather-resistant boxes the outerfacings shall be highly water-resistant paperboard which hasbeen treated with a suitable high-grade, wet strength resin.Water-resistant paperboard shall have a 35 % minimum wetmullen retention ver

27、sus dry mullen when tested in accordancewith TAPPI T 810 and T 812.7.1.1.3 CaliperThe thickness of the finished fiberboardshall be no less than 0.525 in. (13.3 mm), when tested inaccordance with TAPPI T 411.7.1.1.4 Puncture ResistanceThe fiberboard shall have aminimum puncture test value of 1100 in.

28、 oz per in. of tear (36J) when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 803. Only onepuncture reading on each specimen may fall below the allow-able minimum and that reading shall be not more than 10 %below the allowable minimum reading.7.1.1.5 Short Column CrushThe short column crushstrength of the fiberb

29、oard shall be not less than 155 lb/in. (27kN/m), minimum average, when tested in accordance withTAPPI T 811.7.1.2 Adhesive:7.1.2.1 For non-weather-resistant containers, the facingsand corrugated medium shall be securely bonded with adhesiveover the entire area of contact.7.1.2.2 For weather-resistan

30、t containers, in addition to therequirements specified in 7.1.2.1, the adhesive shall be of thewater-resistant type and the fiberboard shall show no plyseparation greater than14 in. (6 mm) when tested in accordancewith TAPPI T 812.7.1.3 Metal Fasteners (3x)Metal fasteners shall be com-mercially pre-

31、formed staples or staples formed from commer-cial steel stitching wire. All metal fasteners shall havecommercially-applied coating of zinc or copper wash.7.2 DimensionsDimensions of the containers furnishedshall be as specified (see 6.1). Unless otherwise specified, thecontainer dimensions shall be

32、inside measurements with atolerance of 614 in. (6 mm).7.3 Certification The manufacturer shall furnish the pro-curing activity with certification that containers furnishedunder this specification meet the requirements specified herein.7.4 Style A Containers:7.4.1 Construction Construction shall be i

33、n accordancewith Fig. 1 (regular-slotted container). This container shall beone piece of triple-wall corrugated fiberboard scored andslotted (slots shall have a minimum width of38 in. (10 mm) toform a body piece having four flaps for closing each of twoopposite faces. The flaps along the longer edge

34、 are the outerflaps, and those along the shorter edge are the inner flaps. Flapsshall not project beyond the edge of the container. All lengthflaps shall be equal in length, and all width flaps shall be equalin length. The outer flaps shall not overlap when closed norhave a gap to exceed14 in. (7 mm

35、). The body joint (manufac-turers joint) overlap shall be not less than 2 in. (50 mm) wide,FIG. 2 Style B BoxFIG. 3 Style C BoxD5168033and both the overlap and the overlapped portion of the bodyshall be crushed prior to stapling or gluing. The container maybe constructed from two sheets of triple-wa

36、ll corrugatedfiberboard only when the board manufacturers machinery isincapable of producing sheets of a size suitable for single-sheetconstruction. When two-piece construction is utilized, the twobody joints shall be on diagonally opposite edges. When metalstaples are used they shall be placed appr

37、oximately on a 45angle across the overlap and shall be placed not more than 1 in.(25 mm) apart. The 1-in. measurement shall be from the lowertip on one staple to the top tip of the staple directly below. Thefirst and last staple shall be placed34 614 in. (20 6 7 mm)from the end of the overlap. When

38、the joint is glued, there shallbe a minimum of 75 % fiber tear of the overlap area whenpulled apart. The direction of the flutes shall be vertical in thesides and ends of the container. There shall be no surfacebreaks in the board when folded 180 along the score lineparallel to the flute direction a

39、nd 90 along the score lineperpendicular to the flute direction.7.4.2 Alternate Construction:7.4.2.1 When specified, Style A containers shall be fur-nished with a 112-in. (36-mm) overlap on the outside top andbottom flaps. The overlapped areas of the flaps shall be crushed(see Fig. 1).7.4.2.2 When sp

40、ecified, the score lines of the inner flaps,die-cut only, of Style A containers shall be offset a distance ofthe thickness of the board from the score lines of the outerflaps.7.4.2.3 When specified, all flaps shall be crushed or scoredadjacent to the score line approximately 212 in. (65 mm) widealon

41、g the entire length of the flap to facilitate closure of thecontainer flap.7.5 Style B Containers:7.5.1 ConstructionConstruction shall be in accordancewith Fig. 2 (full telescope container). The container shallconsist of a body and a cover, each being one piece of slottedand scored triple-wall corru

42、gated fiberboard. The inside depthof the cover shall be the overall depth of the body. When set up,the flaps shall not overlap and shall be fastened to the sidewalls of the container with staples, or, when specified, bygluing. The arrangement of the staples shall be as shown in Fig.2, and each flap

43、shall have not less than four staples. Thestaples shall be not more than 112 in. (36 mm) nor less than 1in. (25 mm) from the free edges of the flaps. The spacing of thestaples around the edge of each flap shall be not more than 5 in.(127 mm) from the center of one staple to the center of the nextsta

44、ple. When flaps are glued, there shall be a minimum of 75 %fiber tear of the overlap area when pulled apart. There shall beno surface breaks in the board when folded 90 along the scoreline.7.6 Style C Container:7.6.1 Construction Construction shall be in accordancewith Fig. 3. This is a two-piece tr

45、iple-wall corrugated fiber-board container consisting of a half slotted container body withtop flaps 4 in. (102 mm) long and a separate flanged cover.Stapling or gluing for the body shall meet the requirements of7.4.1, and for the cover shall meet the requirements of 7.5.1.The cover shall be at leas

46、t 6 in. (152 mm) deep. The directionof the flutes shall be vertical in the sides and ends of thecontainer. There shall be no surface breaks in the board whenfolded 180 along the score line parallel to the flute direction,and 90 along the score line perpendicular to the flute direction.7.6.2 Alternat

47、e Construction:7.6.2.1 When specified, Style C containers shall be fur-nished with a 112-in. (38-mm) overlap on the bottom flaps. Theoverlapped areas of the flaps shall be crushed as shown for aStyle A container (see Fig. 1).7.6.2.2 When specified, offset scoring shall be in accordancewith 7.4.2.2.7

48、.6.2.3 When specified, crushing of flaps shall be in accor-dance with 7.4.2.3.7.6.2.4 When specified, double-wall fiberboard covered bySpecification D 4727 shall be used in construction of covers forClass 1, Style C containers.7.6.3 Unless otherwise specified, Style C containers shall befurnished wi

49、thout pallet bases. When pallet bases are required,the size and style, including material requirements, placement,and size of skids, and so forth, shall be specified in the contractor order. When specified, the cover shall have double thicknessof end flaps or possess interlocking features. When specified,sleeves and interior pads made of triple-wall fiberboard shall befurnished with each container.7.7 Compliance and Certification Markings:7.7.1 Weather-Resistant ContainersWeather-resistantcontainers made to comply with this specification shal
