Scope1.1 This practice describes the procedure and equipment fortaking surface samples of water or other liquids using a dipper.A pond sam
3、pler or dipper with extension handle allows theoperator to sample streams, ponds, waste pits, and lagoons asfar as 15 ft from the bank or other secure footing. The dipperis useful in filling a sample bottle without contaminating theoutside of the bottle.1.2 This standard does not purport to address
4、all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. 6、SamplingMethods, Second Edition33. Summary of Practice3.1 The dipper is lowered into the liquid and lifted out whileavoiding splashing or otherwise disturbing the surface layer. The sample is then poured into a sample container.4. Significance and Use4.1 This practice is intended for use in the sampl
7、ing ofsurface waters and other liquids.4.2 Dipper equipment is uncomplicated in construction, simple to use, and relatively easy to decontaminate; however, this practice will not provide accurate results with multiphaseliquids.4.3 This practice is to be used by personnel acquiringsamples.4.4 The dippe
8、r is best used to take a surface sample ofliquid. No attempt should be made to take subsurface sampleswith a dipper because mixing and dilution will occur as thedipper is brought to the surface. Subsurface layers must besampled using a device that can be closed prior to bringing itto the surface (fo
9、r example, a COLIWASA, tube sampler, orbottle sampler).4.5 The dipper is not appropriate for sampling multiphaseliquids if quantitative characterization is needed.4.6 When volatile organic analysis (VOA) will be per-formed, samples obtained with a dipper should be poured intoan appropriate container
10、 (VOA vial) with minimal air contactand agitation.4.7 This practice should be used in conjunction with GuideD 4687, which covers sampling plans, safety, Quality Assur-ance (QA), preservation, decontamination, labeling, and chain-of-custody procedures, also Practice D 5088, which coversdecontaminatio

Sampling Equipment5.1 Dippers may be fabricated as shown in Fig. 1 and arealso available commercially (see Fig. 2). Disposable dippersare convenient for use with hazardous

Light weight and rigidity are important character-istics of the extension handle.6. Sample Containers6.1 Plastic, glass, or other nonreactive containers

Procedure7.1 Have sample containers ready for use.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D34 on WasteManagement and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D34.01.03 onSampling Equipment.Current edi
