、Designation: F 1435 08An American National StandardStandard Specification forDesignation of the Balance Point Location for ArcheryArrows1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F 1435; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case

、 of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers the method of determining anddesignating the location of the balan

、ce point of an arrowassembly for use with an archery bow.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2. Terminology2.1 Definition

、s of Terms Specific to This Standard:2.1.1 Archery Trade Association (ATA), nthe archeryindustry manufacturers organization that has originated somestandardized terms and configurations that are accepted andused universally.2.1.2 ATA actual arrow length, nthe length dimensionfrom the bottom of the n

、ock slot forward to a designated pointnear the front or leading end of the arrow shaft. The designatedpoint varies to accommodate the different designs because ofthe differences in arrow point design and attachment.2.1.2.1 For arrows incorporating interchangeable point sys-tem inserts and other poin

、t or adaptor types that insert into theopen forward end of the arrow shaft, the designated point is thefront end of the arrow shaft, often referred to as the “cutlength” (Fig. 1).2.1.2.2 For arrows having the front end of the shaft taperedor swaged, the designated point is the most forward extension

、of the full diameter of the shaft (Fig. 2).2.1.2.3 For arrows incorporating outserts, the designatedpoint is34 in. (19 mm) forward of the rearward end of theoutsert (Fig. 3).2.1.2.4 For arrows using heads that have integral cylindricalsockets incorporated within the basic head configuration, thedesi

、gnated point is the rearward end of the socket (Fig. 4).2.1.3 arrow point, na general term used to describe anypoint or head attached to the front end of an arrow.2.1.4 balance point, nthat location along the length of thearrow which, when positioned over a knife edge, will result inthe arrow being

、in a perfectly balanced condition. It is thelongitudinal location of the center of gravity of the arrowassembly.2.1.5 front of center (FOC), nfor good flight characteris-tics, the balance point or center of gravity of an arrow assemblymust be located at some position forward of the longitudinaldimen

、sional center of the arrow. The FOC distance is not afixed dimension. It can vary with the design of the arrowassembly and its components. It is also not necessarily aprecise dimension since satisfactory arrow flight can be1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on Sports

To reference typical FOC locations see 3.4.1.2.1.6 insert, na machined or molded component, usuallywith a flange on the leading end, that is bonded into the frontend of the arrow shaft. The insert can have an internal threadto accept the threaded shank of an arrow point. The

、 insert canalso have a tapered forward extension to permit mounting anarrow point with a tapered socket. The majority of arrowassemblies are fitted with an insert of the first type to permit thearrow point to be interchanged very readily.2.1.7 integral socket arrow points, nmany arrow points, particu

、larly those used on target or field arrows and includingsome hunting arrow heads, have integral sockets incorporatedinto the arrow point itself in order to accept the forward end ofthe arrow shaft. Arrows using points of these types requirespecial consideration when determining the standard ATAarrow

、 length and method of establishing the FOC distance ofthe center of gravity or balance point of the arrow assembly.2.1.8 nock slot, nthe slot located at the extreme rear of thearrow to permit it to be positioned on the shooting string of thebow and to be retained on the string during the drawing and

、launching of that arrow. Almost all arrows being manufacturedpresently are fitted with independent, replaceable, moldedplastic nock units that contain the slot.2.1.9 outsert, na component similar to an “insert,” exceptthat the rear is configured to fit over rather than into theforward end of the arr

、ow shaft. In this manner, the “outsert” fitson the outside of the arrow shaft instead of on the inside, asdoes the insert. Like the insert, the outsert can have an internalthread in its forward end to accept the threaded shank of anarrow point.3. Establishing the FOC Measurement3.1 Configuration of

、the Arrow AssemblyWhen the bal-ance point of the arrow is determined, the arrow assembly shallbe complete with all components, including the arrow point inplace and mounted securely ready for shooting.3.2 Determining the Balance PointThe arrow assemblyshall be placed on a knife edge and moved longit

The location of the balance pointshall be marked accurately to permit subsequent measurement.3.3 Calculation of Percent FOC:3.3.1 OptionalFrom the front of the shaft assembly, measure the distance from the designated point (see 2.1.2)tothe balance point. Calculate percent FOC using the following formula:FOC, % 5 100L/2 2 B!L(1)where:B = distance from balance point to designated point (see2.1.2), andL = ATA arrow length (see 2.1.2).3.4 RecommendedF

、rom the bottom of nock slot, measurethe distance from the bottom of the nock slot to the balancepoint (Fig. 5). Calculate percent FOC using the followingformula:FOC, % 5 100A 2 L/2!L(2)where:A = distance from balance point to bottom of slot, andL = ATA actual arrow length (see 2.1.2).3.4.1 Typical F
