3、 with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) pipe and fittings that are tobe joined by PVC solvent cements meeting the requirements ofSpecification D 2564.1.2 These primers are used in pressure and nonpressureapplications with plain end pipe and either socket-type fittingsor bell end pipe. These primers prepare
4、 the surface of pipe andfittings before the application of solvent cement. The primerseffect on the set and cure time of the joint is dependent on thecement, pipe size, application method, temperature, and hu-midity.1.3 Aprocedure for using the primer with cement is given inPractice D 2855.1.4 The t

11、rements4.1 The primer shall be an organic liquid with water-likeviscosity and shall not contain any undissolved particles.4.2 The solvent system to be used in the formulation of thisprimer is not specified.NOTE 1If required for identification purposes, colorants shall be usedin the primer. It is rec
12、ommended that orange not be used, since this is therecommended color for CPVC solvent cement covered under Specifica-tion F 493.5. Detail Requirements5.1 Dissolving AbilityThe primer shall be capable ofdissolving at least 10 % by weight of PVC resin at 73.4 63.6F (23 6 2C) within 60 min, as specifie
13、d in 5.1. The PVCresin shall be a resin used to make poly(vinyl chloride)molding or extrusion compound meeting the requirements ofClass 12454-B, as classified in Specification D 1784.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F17 on PlasticPiping Systems and is the direct respon

Test Methods6
16、.1 Dissolving Ability:6.1.1 Weigh 270 g of the primer being tested into a closedmixing container. Weigh out 30 g of PVC resin. Adjust thetemperature of the primer to 73.4 6 3.6F (23 6 2C). Beginmixing the primer, using a laboratory mixer designed formixing flammable liquids. Add the resin to the pri
17、mer andcontinue mixing for 60 min at a mixing speed of 1500 r/min orless, using a mixing blade and speed so that the maximumtemperature of the mixture during the mixing period is 90F(32C) or less. After 60 min, turn off the mixer and adjust thetemperature to 73.4 6 3.6F (23 6 2C).6.1.2 Visually obse
18、rve whether the resin is completelydissolved. The solution shall be smooth, nongrainy, free-flowing, and shall not contain any undissolved resin.6.2 StabilityHold the resin-primer solution at 40F (5C)for 24 h and then observe that (1) the resin is still completelydissolved, (2) the solution is free
19、flowing, and (3) there are nosigns of stringiness or gelatin structure.7. Retest and Rejection7.1 If the results of any test(s) do not meet the requirementsof this specification, the test(s) shall be conducted again onlyby agreement between the purchaser and the seller. Under suchagreement, minimum
20、requirements shall not be lowered, nortests omitted, substituted, changed, or modified, nor shallspecification limits be changed. If upon retest, failure occurs,the quantity of product represented by the test(s) does not meetthe requirements of this specification.8. Report8.1 Report the following in
21、formation:8.1.1 Name of primer manufacturer,8.1.2 Lot number,8.1.3 Dissolving ability, pass or fail, and8.1.4 Stability, pass or fail.9. Container Labeling and Marking9.1 Container labeling of primer shall include the following:9.1.1 Manufacturers or suppliers name and address, trade-name or tradema
22、rk.9.1.2 This designation: “ASTM F 656.9.1.3 Function of material (Primer for PVC pipe and fit-tings. Product name shall be Primer.).9.1.4 Procedure or instructions for application and use.9.1.5 Lot number of batch on container (not on closure orlid).NOTE 2Solvent cement intended for use in the join
23、ing of potablewater piping should be evaluated and certified as safe for this purpose bya testing agency acceptable to the local health authority. The evaluationshould be in accordance with requirements for chemical extraction, taste,and odor that are no less restrictive than those included in NSF S

The seal or mark of the laboratory making the evaluation shouldbe included on the container.9.1.6 End-use applications (examples: potable water, pres-sure use).9.1.7 All warnings and cautions necessitated by:9.1.7.1 Ingredients,9.1.7.2 Handling and distribution of the product,9.1.7.3

26、. Safe Handling of Primer10.1 Primers for plastic pipe are made from flammableliquids. Keep them away from all sources of ignition. Maintainventilation to reduce fire hazard and to minimize breathing ofsolvent vapors. Avoid contact of primers with skin and eyes.10.2 Refer to Practice F 402 for addit

Quality Assurance11.1 When the product is marked with this designation,F 656, the manufacturer affirms that the product was manufac-tured, inspected, sampled, and tested in accordance with thisspecification and has been found to meet the requirements ofthis specification.F65602
