3、orrected in February 2008.1. Scope1.1 This test method is used for determining chemicalcompatibility of thread sealant compounds with threaded pipeand fittings materials. This procedure is generally applicable tothread sealant compounds which are either hard-cure, soft-cureor non-hardening paste at

4、room temperatures (that is, non-liquid or semi-liquid).1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and to determine theapplicabilit

Summary of Test Method3.1 The procedure uses tensile specimen test bars in alongitudinal tensile test geometry in a constant load (creep)method. All procedures a

6、re run at an ambient temperature of73F (23C).4. Significance and Use4.1 These procedures can be used to evaluate thread sealantsrelative to causing environmental stress-cracking in thermo-plastic materials. This testing results in determining time-to-failure vs. engineering stress. This procedure ca

7、n also be usedin stress-rupture regression analysis, where a variety of stresslevels are needed. The methodology can be readily adapted toconducting immersion tests in liquids.5. Interferences5.1 In these procedures, there may be interference effectsdue to differences in resin or the additives in th

Apparatus6.1 Apparatus for constant tensile method.6.1.1 Constant-tensile-load test apparatus which maintainsthe load to within 61 % throughout

9、 the test duration.6.1.2 Immersion vessels which can be mounted to thetensile-load apparatus (if applicable).7. Test Specimen7.1 Test bars may be either fabricated from compressionmolded plaques or injection molded. Test times and/or stresslevels may be reduced by incorporating a knit-line into anin

10、jection-molded test bar. If a knit-line is present, the moldshould be designed such that the knit-line occurs in the centerof the bar, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.7.2 AType IV specimen as shown in D 638 shall be used forreferee testing. Other specimen geometries may be used ifshown to pro

Calibration and Standardization8.1 All test instrumentation shall be calibrated to standardstraceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.8.2 The test stress (tensile) shall be calibrated by use of aknown aggressive chemical agent (positive control) to de

12、ter-mine the stress needed to produce failures within 100 hours onat least 75 % of the specimens. This stress is then used fortesting of the thread sealant under consideration.NOTE 1The known aggressive chemical agent is generally deter-mined by causing premature failures as indicated in 8.2. Some a

For example, linseed and soybean oil have been used for thispurpose with PVC and CPVC test materials.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F17 and is thedirect responsibility of Subcommittee

Conditioning9.1 Condition the specimens and the thread sealant for 40hours at 23 6 2C and 50 % 6 5 % RH prior to applying thesealant to the specimen.10. Procedure10.1 Constant tensile method10.1.1

17、Attach the grips to the test specimen. The ends of thegrips shall be at least 0.75 in. (15 mm) from the area where thetest sealant is being applied. If testing in an immersionapparatus, this requirement does not apply, but care must betaken to ensure failures are not initiated in the region near the

19、n.10.1.4 Record the time-to-failure of each specimen.10.1.5 If the failure occurs at an area away from where thesealant was applied (that is, clean tensile bar region), at a timeless than the negative control, it shall not be considered a validtest for that specimen. If only one of 4 specimens fails

20、 in thismanner, it may be discarded and the remaining three reported. If more than one fails in this manner, new specimens shall betested.11. Calculation or Interpretation of Results11.1 For this method, the applied stress or strain should besufficient to cause failures with known stress-cracking age
