、1999 Foreword This Part of BS2588 has been prepared under the direction of the Health Care Standards Policy Committee The first edition of BS2588, which was published in 1955, was prepared at the request of the Hospital Equipment Standards Advisory Committee of the British Standards Institution. In
、that edition, only the adult size Perfection 1)type of bed pan was specified. When considering the revision of BS2588:1955, it was confirmed that the design criteria for bed pans were not wholly applicable to the portable sanitary pans to be used with commode chairs. Accordingly, it was agreed that
、the new edition of BS2588 should be prepared in two Parts with Part1 specifying the requirements for bed pans, and this Part (Part2) specifying two types of portable pan for use in commode chairs. Type1 pans are designed with a lip which rests on supporting bearers in the commode chair. Type2 pans a
、re designed with the base supported by a level surface at between100mm and150mm beneath the commode seat. The sizes of the pans are compatible with the dimensions specified for WC seats specified in BS1254, and with bed pan washer disinfectors specified in BS2745. NOTEAlthough this specification has
、 not been drafted to cover portable commode pans for use with mobile sanitary chairs complying with BS4751 which have been fitted with a suitable cradle or support frame, the commode pans are capable of use with such chairs. Also a pan specified in this Part of BS2588 may be used as a bed pan but it
、 should also comply with the requirements of Part1. Two grades of bed pan are specified. Grade A pans, which are capable of withstanding heat sterilization at134 C, are specified for those who need a sterilizable pan; grade B pans, which will withstand heat disinfection at100 C, are satisfactory for
、 most purposes. This Part of BS2588 specifies performance and marking requirements for reusable pans for commode chairs. It also specifies the surface finish as the quality of finish is of particular importance from the standpoint of ease of cleaning and disinfection and of resistance to corrosion.
、It has been assumed in the drafting of this standard that the tests for assessing compliance will be carried out by those who are appropriately qualified or under the supervision of experienced personnel. If the quality of a product can be assured only by in-process control, the user of this standar
、d may wish to consider product certification. Where in-process quality control is not appropriate the user of this standard may wish to consider assessed capability. Product certification. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of third party certification for produc

Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes will be forwarded by BSI to the Assoc
