、. The requirements for salvage sheets of PVC-coated man-made fibre fabrics have been revised to include fabrics based on newer cloth constructions. These sheets have been subjected to a use trial carried out by the London Salvage Corps, and gave satisfactory results in service. Flammability requirem
、ents based on test2 of BS5438:1976, applicable to all lightweight salvage sheets have been included. It is assumed that such requirements can only be met by the application of a flame resistant treatment, and due allowance has been made for the effect of such treatments on other properties. Research
、 is in progress on the development of modified specimen mounting procedures for use with certain types of fabrics when tested using test2 of BS5438:1976. If this leads to more reproducible results then a suitable amendment will be made to this standard. This edition does not specify requirements for
、 the scale of sampling to be employed. In appropriate cases guidance can be obtained from BS6001. Salvage sheets for fire service use should possess certain properties which the committee found impracticable to specify in precise terms such as: a) a high degree of waterproofness, particularly after
、considerable use and cleaning; b) limitation of mass and bulk consistent with sufficient strength in order to increase the number of sheets which can be accommodated in the stowage space available on fire appliances and to facilitate the carrying and handling of the sheets at fires; c) resistance to
、 abrasion and the action of oils and corrosive chemicals; d) ease of cleaning and maintenance of a clean appearance after considerable use; e) speed of drying; f) ease of repair. It is recognized that owing to inherent differences in materials and manufacture some of the standard sheets are likely t
、o offer better performance than others in respect of individual properties on this list. Heavier constructions than those specified here are described in BS3408. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for
、their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to6, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see
、 copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3566:1982 BSI 11-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for the construction and making up of a range of lightweight salvage sheets in flax, polye
、ster/cotton and coated man-made fibre fabrics intended for fire service use. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Fabrics of flax or polyester/cotton 2.1 Yarn requirements 2.1.1 Flax. The yarns shall be manufactured from retted flax a
、nd shall be boiled to such an extent that, when tested in accordance with the procedure described in5/82 of BS Handbook No.11:1974 the residual alkali solubility does not exceed10%. No chlorine shall be used in boiling. 2.1.2 Polyester/cotton. Warp yarns shall be two-fold, in which both single yarns
、 shall consist of one end of280 dtex polyester filament corespun with an equal mass of cotton. Weft yarns shall be singles, consisting of two ends of280 dtex or one end of550dtex polyester filament corespun with at least an equal mass of cotton. The composition of the fabric shall be50% polyester: 5
、0% cotton when determined in accordance with BS4407. 2.2 Construction. The fabric shall be uniformly woven in a plain weave from the yarns specified in2.1.1 and2.1.2. Polyester/cotton type2 fabric shall use a rip-stop construction by weaving two threads as one at intervals of approximately7mm in bot
、h warp and weft directions. The fabric shall be free from defects with straight and firm selvedges and shall comply with the requirements of Table 1. In the unproofed state foreign matter shall not be present to such an extent as to prevent adequate proofing. Flax fabrics shall have a cropped finish
、. 2.3 Preservative treatment. The treatment applied to the textile shall be such that the fabric appearance is unchanged, and that the treated fabric is dry, non-tacky and pliable. The preservative method used shall be one of the following, all of which are specified in BS2087-1. a) Copper naphthena
、te process. The copper content of the treated textile shall be in accordance with the requirements of BS2087-1. b) Cuprammonium process. The copper content of the treated textile shall be in accordance with the “normal” process of BS2087-1, unless the fabric is subsequently to be treated with a rot-
、resistant finish, when the “special” process of BS2087-1 shall be used. c) Pentachlorophenyl laurate (PCPL) process. The PCPL content of the treated textile shall be in accordance with the “light” process of BS2087-1. d) Copper 8 process. The copper content of the treated textile shall be in accorda
、nce with the “normal” process of BS2087-1. 2.4 Flame resistant treatment. In order to comply with the requirements of2.5.8, it is permissible for a flame resistant treatment to be applied. 2.5 Physical properties of proofed fabrics 2.5.1 General. The fabric, after being subjected to the treatments d
、etailed in2.3 and2.4, shall comply with the requirements of2.5.2 to2.5.8. 2.5.2 Behaviour at high temperatures. The fabric shall not become tacky in storage or in use at temperatures up to50 C, and when tested in accordance with method13 of BS3424:1973 at a temperature of50 C, shall separate without
、 damage to the surface coating. NOTEAmbient temperatures of this order can occur in use and it is essential that the fabric does not stick to itself or to other articles with which it may come into contact. 2.5.3 Behaviour at low temperatures. The fabric, when in the standard condition for physical
、testing as defined in BS1051, shall show no tendency to crack when tested in accordance with method10of BS3424:1973 at a temperature of 15 C. 2.5.4 Addition to mass per unit area. The total amount of proofing matter present is the sum of the mass of matter extracted in accordance with method2 of BS2
、087-2:1981, plus the mineral ash of the extracted fabric when determined in accordance with BS4032. The total mass of proofing matter per unit area in the treated textile shall be not less than10% and not more than40% when expressed as a percentage of the mass per unit area of the unproofed fabric d
、etermined as specified in Table 1. 2.5.5 Breaking strength. The breaking strength of the fabric determined by the method indicated shall be not less than90% of the value quoted in Table 1. 2.5.6 Resistance to tear. The tear strength of the fabric determined by the method indicated shall be not less
、than65% of the value quoted in Table 1. 2.5.7 Water resistance. The proofed fabric shall be tested in accordance with Appendix B. There shall be no water percolation to the outside of any of the cones, and the fabric shall be dry above the water level inside the cones. BS3566:1982 2 BSI 11-1999 Tabl

Before being subjected to flammability testing the specimens shall be subjected to the leaching/flexing procedure described in clause8 (added by Amendment No.1) of BS5651:1978. Test 2 of BS5438:1976 shall be used. Three specimens sh
、all be tested in the warp/machine direction and three in the weft/cross direction in accordance with test2 of BS5438:1976 using a10s flame application time. No part of any hole nor any part of the lowest boundary of any flame shall reach the upper edge or either vertical edge of any specimen and the

In accordance with Appendix B of BS5438:1976, if any part of any hole or any part of the lowest boundary of any flame reaches the upper edge or either vertical edge of one specimen, or if there is any separation of any flaming debris
、 from one specimen, a further six specimens shall be tested. If all six new specimens comply with the above requirements, the fabric shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of this standard. If any part of any hole or any part of the lowest boundary of any flame reaches the upper edge or eit
