Originally prepared at the request of the Consumer Concil, these methods may be used to provide some of the data required for an informative labelling scheme. The methods of measurement
、 for household electric appliances will form parts of BS3999. Each part will apply to a particular appliance. In the case of household electrical appliances, the relevant safety requirements are contained in appropriate sections of BS3456, “The testing and approval of household electrical appliances

This part of BS3999 prepared under the authority of the Electrical Industry Standards Committee, deals with the standard methods of measuring the performance of electric clothes drying cabinets and racks. Annex A gives suggested information required for an informative labelling scheme for electri

The me
、thods of measurement do not apply to tumbler dryers. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this part of this BritishStandard the following definitions apply: 2.1 electric clothes drying cabinet or rack (referredto as dryer) a dryer with means for supporting clothes and applying a current of electrically
、 heated air to the clothes 2.2 fan-assisted clothes drying cabinet or rack a dryer in which the circulation of air is assisted by an electrically driven fan 2.3 rated input the input in watts or kilowatts marked on the rating plate 2.4 rated voltage the voltage marked on the rating plate 2.5 towelli
、ng white cotton terry fabric complying with Appendix Z 3 General conditions of measurement 3.1 General. The supply voltage for the measurements shall be such that the input is equal to the rated input, except that where a dryer is marked with a voltage range which includes240V, the measurements shal
、l be made at an input corresponding to240V. For measurements under Clauses6 and7 the relative humidity shall be65 3%. The measurements shall be made at an ambient temperature of20 2 C. If a cover is provided it shall be in place for all measurements. Before the measurements of Clauses6 and7 are made
、, the dryer shall be run without load for2h; it shall then be allowed to cool and all surfaces likely to come into contact with the towelling are wiped clean. 3.2 Standard towelling. To prepare the towelling referred to in2.1 (5) it shall be washed to remove any soluble finish. After drying and cond
、itioning as referred to below, the towelling shall be weighed to determine its initial conditioned weight. It shall be replaced when it has lost3% of its initial conditioned weight. 3.2.1 Conditioning. The towelling shall be conditioned at the ambient temperature and humidity referred to in3.1 befor
、e any measurements are made. 4 Effective total length of hanging rails 4.1 Procedure. Measure the length of each rail from which it is possible to hang material vertically. The effective total length of rails is the sum of all the measured lengths except that: 1) Where any two rails are less than2.5
、cm apart, only one is included. 2) Any section of rail which has less than15cm clear space below it is not included. 4.2 Result. Record the result in centimetres. 5 Effective maximum area of hanging material 5.1 Procedure. Measure the clear depth from the top of each rail included as a measured rail
、 in Clause4. In the case of rails which are in the same vertical plane the reference plane is to be2.5cm above the lower rail. For each rail, multiply the measured height by the length of that rail as determined in4.1, and calculate the area of the hanging material. Since material will hang either s
、ide of a rail, the areas found by calculation are doubled, and the total of these values is the effective maximum area of hanging material. In the case of rack dryers the clear depth is considered to be terminated by the horizontal plane through the highest point of the heater unit. 5.2 Result. Reco
、rd the effective maximum area of hanging material in square centimetres.BS3999-4:1967 2 BSI 08-1999 6 Time to dry without changing round 6.1 Procedure. Prepare a load of standard towelling to suit the spaces for hanging as determined in5.1, and determine the conditioned weight of the towelling. Hang
、 this load in the dryer and determine the weight of the loaded dryer. Remove the load of towelling from the dryer and soak it with water at a temperature of45 5 C, until the damp weight is twice the conditioned weight, ensuring that the water is evenly distributed throughout the load. Reload the tow
、elling into the dryer and set the heater control to the manufacturers recommended setting. If a control setting has not been recommended, set it to the maximum control setting. Switch on the dryer and continue the operation until the towelling has reached1.05 times the conditioned weight. Determine
、the time taken for the load of towelling to reach this weight. Note by visual inspection whether there is any discoloration of the towelling due to the drying process. 6.2 Result. Record the time taken to dry the full load of towelling, expressed in hours and minutes. Record the heat control setting
、 used. Record any visible discoloration of the towelling due to the drying process. 7 Time to dry when towelling is changed round 7.1 Procedure. Repeat the method described in6.1 and after1h, change the towelling round in a manner most likely to assist drying.5min is the maximum time allowed for the
、 change round; this time is to be included in the total drying time. 7.2 Result. Record the time taken to dry the full load of towelling, expressed in hours and minutes. Record the heat control setting used. Record any visible discoloration of the towelling due to the drying process.BS3999-4:1967 BS
