It is identical to ISO 6586:1980 (confirmed1986) “Data processing Implementation of the ISO 7-

8、bit and 8-bit coded character sets on punched cards” published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 6586:1980 superseded two standards: ISO 1679:1973 “Representation of ISO7-bit coded character set on 12-row punched cards”, which was technically equivalent to BS 4636 “Spe

9、cification for punched cards” Part3:1971 “Representation of 7-bit codes and of certain numerical sets on12-row punched cards”, and ISO 2021:1975 “Representation of 8-bit codes on12-row punched cards”, which was technically equivalent to BS 4636 “Specification for punched cards” Part 4:1971 “Represen

10、tation of 8-bit codes on12-row punched cards”. This revision of BS 4636-3 supersedes both BS 4636-3:1971 and BS 4636-4:1971, which are withdrawn. This standard specifies the card hole patterns assigned to bit combinations, whereas BS 4636-3:1971 and BS 4636-4:1971 were also concerned with the repres

11、entation of particular coded character sets on 12-row punched cards. In the UK, where the 7-bit and 8-bit coded character sets for information interchange are applied, users should exercise the national options specified in BS 4730 and BS 6006 respectively. Terminology and conventions. The text of t

12、he International Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following. Wherever the words “International Standard

13、” appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as “British Standard”. The Technical Committee has reviewed the provisions of ISO 2022:1982, to which reference is made in the text, and has decided that it is acceptable for use in conjunction with this Part of BS 4636. Additional informatio

14、n. ISO 2022:1982 is currently being revised. Until that revision is published no decision will be made on its implementation as a British Standard. ISO 2022:1982 was not implemented as a British Standard. BS 4953, which was technically equivalent to ISO 2022:1973, has been withdrawn. NOTETypographic

15、al error. In Table 1, at position 04/0, the punched positions should be 8 and 4, not3 and 4. 19、over.iv blankBS4636-3:1986 BSI 11-1999 1 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard defines the implementation of the ISO 7-bit and 8-bit coded character sets on punched cards. It specifies the representation of 7-bit combinations and 8-bit combinations on 12-row punched cards. Thi

20、s representation is derived from, and compatible with, the code known as the “Hollerith Code”. It will ensure compatibility with a large proportion of existing punched card files. This International Standard does not specify any redundancy nor does it define techniques for error control. This Intern

21、ational Standard is intended for the general interchange of information among data processing systems, when using the ISO 7-bit or8-bit coded character sets on 12-row punched cards as data carrier. 2 References ISO 646, 7-bit coded character set for information processing interchange. 23、 coded character set for information interchange. 3 Punched cards 3.1 A punched card, as referred to in this International Standard, is an interchange document in which characters are represented in successive columns, each column having twelve possible punching positions. This International Standar

24、d does not define the number of columns in a card, nor the shape of the holes punched in a card, nor any of its other physical characteristics. The above features are the subject of other International Standards. 3.2 Twelve possible punching positions are available in each column of the card (see Fi

25、gure). For the purpose of this International Standard, they are designated as: 12, 11, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 The hole patterns specified in this International Standard are formed by punching the twelve available positions of a given column of a punched card in the following way: positions 12,

26、 11, 0, 9, 8, may be punched in any combination, giving 2 5= 32 possibilities; only one of the positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 may be punched, which together with the NO PUNCH condition gives eight possibilities. These rules provide for 256 hole patterns (32 8). 4 Specification 4.1 Implementation of t

27、he 8-Bit coded character set Table 1 specifies for each of the 256 8-bit combinations the corresponding hole-pattern. The columns and rows are numbered in binary and decimal notation. Each position in Table 1 is identified by its column and row number (for example 06/11) and by the corresponding bit

28、 combination (for example 0110 1011, where the most significant bit is on the left). 4.2 Implementation of the 7-Bit coded character set The hole-patterns shown in the first half of Table 1 (i.e. columns 00 to 07) apply to the 128 7-bit combinations, which are obtained ignoring the most significant
