The colours listed in the standard have been approved by the Architectural Division of the Vitreous Enamel Development Co

、uncil. In this revision, colours for enamels or glazes on ceramic bases have been excluded as they relate to a different sector of industry with different manufacturing problems. It is anticipated that such colours will be dealt with in the technical committees responsible for the specification of c

、d with sufficient flexibility for meeting design and technical requirements. British Standards institution BSI BS*:L(OO 7b BS 490Q : 1976 1. Scope This British Standard specifies the colours of vitreous enamels applied to metals for use as interior and exterior claddings for building purposes. 2. Re

、ferences The titles of the British Standards referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3, Definition vitreous enamel. A glazed surface finish produced by the application of a powdered inorganic glass, dry or suspended in water, to metal parts, and its subsequent fusion. 4. Th

、e colour range The content of this derived colour range is indicated by the cut out apertures in the enclosed overlay. This is keyed to register with the five-fold composite colour card included in BS 5252 and identifies them by their code references (see clause 5). BS 5252 relates the colours in te

、rms of selected steps in the visual attributes of hue, greyness and weight. Hue is the attribute of redness, yellowness, blueness, etc. The framework has twelve horizontal hue rows, plus a further row for neutral colours (.e. without hue), numbered and named as follows. 02 red-purple 16 blue-green 0

、4 red 18 blue 06 yellow-red 20 purple-blue 08 yellowred 22 violet 10 yellow 24 purple 12 green-yellow 14 green O0 neutral Greyness is the estimated grey content of colours. The framework divides the colours into five groups, lettered A to E, representing steps of diminishing greyness as follows. Gro

、up B nearly grey Group C grey/clear Group B nearly clear Group E clear Weight is a subjective term for lightness modified as necessary to produce colours of the same character in different hues. The framework provides tor up to eight vertical columns of colour of equal weight in each greyness group

、ranging from lightest on the left to darkest or heaviest on the right. The columns are numbered from the left- hand column of A group (01) to the right-hand column of E group (58). The numbering, however, is not regular across eight columns in each group because some column numbers were established

、as standard in BS 4800. Group A grey 5. Identification of colours Each colour is identified by a three-part code taken from BS 5252 and these codes are to be used to identify the colours for purposes of specifying or ordering. The approximate Munsell references given in appendix A of this standard a

(Neutral colours are designated OO.) (b) The second part signifiesgreyness and consists of a single LETTER. (c) The third p

、art signifies weight and consists of a NUMBER with two numerals. Examples: 08 B 15, 12 D 45,OO A 03. Thus codes with the same first pair of numerals identify colours in the same hue row, codes with the same letter indicate colours in the same greyness group and codes with the same second pair of num

、erals identify colours in the same weight column. 6. Matching The colour patterns in the composite card included in BS 5252 are shown in semi-gloss finish for visual indication of the colour in daylight. For matching purposes a fan O containing larger patches of all colours in that standard is avail

、able from BSI. When using the larger patches it should be borne in mind that the relative appearance of surface colours is affected by the character of the light in which they are compared. Thus close matches under one illuminant may not be close under others, a phenomenon resulting from pigment dif

、ferences and known as metamerism. !t is recommended therefore that comparisons should be made under good diffuse daylight or under an illuminant which meets the requirements of BS 950 : Part 1. For applications for interior use samples should also be compared with the individual patterns under tungs

、ten light in order to avoid severe metamerism. NOTE. Attention is drawn to BS 3900 : Part DI, which may be appropriate for colour comparison on flat surfaces. 7. Types of finish All the colours in this standard are intended to be available in gloss and semi-gloss finish. On technical grounds the pre

、ferred finish is semi-gloss. The availability of matt finishes shall be checked with the manufacturer. O 8. Munsell references Approximate Munsell references (see Munsell book of colour, published by the Munsell Color lnc., $altimore, Maryland, USA), which classify the colours in terms of hue, value

、 (lightness) and chroma (saturation) in that order, are given in appendix A as a further guide to the visual propertieb of the colours in this standard. They are for information only and are not to be used for specifying or ordering the colours. Since the colour patterns are not those of the Munsell

、 Color Inc. and exact agreement cannot be guaranteed, all Munsell references in this British Standard are approxjmate only. The value figure in these references can be used to give an approximate estmate of the reflectance of each colour, as a percentage, by substituting it for V in the formula V(V-

、 I), e.g. the value figures in the Munsell references SY 6/2 and N7 are 6 and 7 respectively which, substituted for V in the formula, give approximate reflectances of 30 % and 42 %.
