The setti

、ng of an adhesive is catalysed by the adherend surface being used. This method is used to assess the capacity of the adhesive to set on difficult metals using one example, zinc, under specified conditions. The test does not necessarily represent the performance of the material in service. 1 Scope Th

、is Part of BS5350 describes a method for the determination of the ability of anaerobic adhesives to set on metal surfaces. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this Part of BS5350 are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definition For the purposes of this Part of BS5350, the following de

、finition applies. 2.1 anaerobic adhesive an adhesive that cures spontaneously in the absence of oxygen, curing being inhibited by the presence of oxygen and catalysed by metal ions 3 Principle The adhesive under test is applied to a metal adherend with a zinc surface and the adherend is bonded with

、an identical adherend to form a crosslap joint. The shear force required to separate the joint is measured. 4 Apparatus and materials 4.1 Cabinet, capable of being controlled at 23 2 C. 4.2 Means for clamping the lower block of the test assembly during the tensile test 4.3 Spring balance, range 0 to

、 100 N, accurate to0.5N. 4.4 Timer 4.5 Plate glass sheet, flat, 200mm wide 200mm long 5mm thick. 4.6 Distilled water, complying with BS3978. 4.7 Abrasive paper, silicon carbide, waterproof, grade P600 complying with BS871. 4.8 Solvent, acetone or propan-2-ol, laboratory reagent grade. 4.9 Tweezers,

、tongs or disposable gloves, for handling treated components. 5 Test pieces 5.1 Adherends The adherends shall be either: a) two blocks of zinc 1)of 99.95 % (m/m) purity and 100mm long 25mm wide; or b) two blocks of steel of the same dimensions, but surfaced with an adhesively-bonded layer of99.95% (m

、/m) zinc, of minimum thickness1mm, on one or both of the100mm 25mm surfaces. The thickness of the blocks shall be such that their masses are each 5005g. One end of each block shall be provided with a means of attaching it to the spring balance (4.3) during the test. 1) For information on the availab

、its surface thoroughly with the distilled water (4.6). Hone one of the zinc surfaces of each of the pair of blocks by moving it forwards and backwards lengthways on the abrasive surface, applying no downward pressure other than that exerted by the mass of the block. Ensure that the paper is always w

、et and continue abrading until the surface of the metal is free from scratches and extraneous material on visual inspection, using normal or corrected vision. Wash the abraded blocks thoroughly in distilled water, wipe off excess water with a clean tissue, rinse them in the solvent (4.8) and allow t

、hem to dry. Take precautions to avoid contamination in subsequent handling (see4.9). 6 Bonding of adherends Place the prepared blocks in the cabinet (4.1), controlled at 23 2 C for at least 15min. After removing the blocks from the cabinet, place one block with its prepared surface uppermost on a fl

、at surface and apply one drop of the test adhesive to the centre of the upper surface. Gently place a second block, prepared surface downwards, on the lower block with its long axis at right angles to the long axis of the lower block and with its centre coincident with the centre of the lower block

、to form a cross, and start the timer (4.4). Maintain this test assembly in the cabinet at23 2 C for 30 1min. 7 Procedure At the end of this curing period remove the test assembly from the cabinet and immediately clamp(4.2) the lower block. Attach the spring balance (4.3) to one end of the upper bloc

、k and apply a steadily increasing shear force parallel to the long axis of the upper block and to the plane of the joint until either the blocks separate or a force of 25N is exceeded (seeFigure 1). If separation occurs, note the force at which this starts. NOTEBlocks may be re-used after cleaning.

、To remove the old adhesive clean the surface with abrasive paper, remove abraded material and polish with a fresh sheet of abrasive paper as described in5.2. 8 Expression of results If the blocks have not separated up to and including a force of 25N, record the result as a pass,i.e. the adhesive is

、deemed to be able to set on metal surfaces. If the force at separation is less than 25N, report the result as the value, in newtons, at which the separation starts. 9 Test report The test report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete

、 identification of the sample; b) the test result; c) that the method of test was conducted in accordance with this Part of BS5350 or, if it was not, deviations from the method.BS5350-G3:1987 BSI 10-1999 3 Figure 1 Test assembly4 blankBS5350-G3:1987 BSI 10-1999 Publications referred to BS 871, Speci
