、this British Standard, published under the direction of the General Electrotechnical Engineering Standards Committee, is identical with IEC Publication554-3-3“Specification for cellulosic papers for electrical purposes. Part3: Specifications for individual materials. Sheet3: Crpe paper” published in

、1980 by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Other Parts of BS5626 are given under “Cross-references” in this national foreword. It is the intention that BS5626 will ultimately replace BS698:1956 “Papers for electrical purposes”, BS4295:1968 “Capacitor tissue paper” and BS5068:1974 “

、Specification for crpe paper for electrical purposes”. A decision on the withdrawal of those standards will be taken at the appropriate stage in the publication of Part3 of this British Standard. Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for pu

、blication as a British Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to the following. In the introduction, the words “This standard is one of a series which deals with” should be read as “BS

、5626 deals with”. Similarly, “The series consists of three parts” should be read as “BS5626 has the three following Parts”. In clause1 “Scope”, the words “This sheet” should be read as “This Section of BS5626”. In2.3, “Sheet1 of Part3” should be read as “Section3.1 of Part3”. Where the expression “s

、hall be as agreed between the purchaser and manufacturer” appears (twice) in the “Remarks” column of Table1 this should be read as “should be as stated in the documentation” (see also “Additional information” for the status of the information in the “Remarks” column of Table1). Additional informatio

、n In Table1, (on page2), as there is no method in Part2, the mandatory test method for the determination of the hill count is given in the “Remarks” column. There are no requirements in this standard for “thickness” or “hill count”. Some considerations involved in the choice of suitable values are g

、iven in the “Remarks” column; clearly, no mandatory requirements are involved and where “shall” is used this should be read as “should”. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.iv blankBS5626-3.3:1982 BSI 09-1999 1 Introduction This standard is one of a series which

、deals with insulating cellulosic papers. The series consists of three parts: Part1: Definitions and general requirements (IEC Publication554-1); Part2: Methods of test (IEC Publication554-2); Part3: Specifications for individual materials. Sheet1: General Purpose Electrical Paper and Sheet4: Electro

、lytic Capacitor Paper have already been published. Sheet3 Class3: Crpe paper 1 Scope This sheet contains the requirements for crpe paper, as defined in IEC Publication554-1, Part1: Definitions and General Requirements, classified as: 2 Requirements 2.1 General The paper shall comply with the general

、 requirements of IEC Publication554-1. 2.2 Sampling The sampling procedures shall be as given in ISO Standard186:1977: Paper and Board Sampling for Testing. 2.3 Primary and secondary crpe The paper may be either of the following: a) primary crpe is defined as a crpe paper made by a technique which d

、oes not include an intermediate stage as a dry, plane web of base paper; b) secondary crpe is defined as a crpe paper made first as a dry, plane web of base paper and then cropped by a subsequent process. The base paper of secondary crpe of Types3.1 and3.2 shall comply with all the requirements in S

、heet1: General Purpose Electrical Paper, of Part3 (IEC Publication554-3-1). For primary crpe, the fibres and their preparation shall be the same as for paper complying with the requirements of Sheet1 of Part3 of this standard. 2.4 Testing When tested by the methods stipulated, the paper shall comply

、 with the requirements listed in Table I. 3 Method of describing requirements When ordering crpe paper, a purchaser should quote the type designation, as given above, and in addition should specify the substance of the base paper and the elongation at break of the crpe paper. If subsequent calenderi

、ng is required, this should be specified by the letterC. The purchaser should also specify whether the crping is to be coarse, medium, or fine. Coarse crpe paper normally has a hill count (see Table I) of up to eight counts per10mm, medium crpe a count of between eight and twelve per10mm, and fine c

、rpe a count greater than twelve per10mm. Examples a) “3.1-70-80C” would specify a hard base paper, with an air permeability of symbol M or L and a substance of70g/m 2crped to give a nominal elongation at break of80%and subsequently calendered. The addition of “fine” would indicate that a fine crpe i

、s required. b) “3.2-90-50” would specify a soft base paper with an air permeability of symbol H and with a substance of90g/m 2crped to give a nominal elongation at break of50%. The addition of “coarse” would indicate that a coarse crpe is required. The preferred nominal values for elongation at brea

、k are20%,30%,50%,80%,120%,200% and300%. (These values are based on the R40 series of preferred numbers.) Type3.1: A hard, comparatively non-absorbent, crimped kraft insulating paper made from base papers of low (L) or medium (M) permeability, such as Types1.3-2M and1.3-2L described in TableI of IEC

、Publication554-1. Type3.2: A soft, porous, crped kraft insulating paper made from base papers of high (H) permeability, such as Type1.2-2H described in TableI of IEC Publication554-1.BS 5626-3.3:1982 2 BSI 09-1999 Table I Requirements for Class3 Crpe paper Property Test method in Part2 Type Unit Req

、uirements Remarks Thickness 2 All Crpe papers are not required to conform to the tolerances on thickness given in Part1; and, in most cases, the thickness is governed by other specified properties, and is of less importance than are those properties. Where thickness is a property of importance (as,

、for example, on crpe papers that have been calendered), the nominal values and tolerances shall be as agreed between the purchaser and manufacturer. In all cases, care shall be taken when handling the paper during the sampling and testing procedures not to stretch the paper. Hill count All Counts pe

、r 10mm Shall be determined as follows: Place a piece of paper (sampled without stretching) without restraint on a flat surface. Place a linear scale on the test piece parallel to the machine direction of the paper and illuminate the surface of the paper obliquely so as to cast deep shadows. Count th

、e number of major folds (hills) in the paper over a total distance of50mm, using an optical magnifier. Repeat the measurement on a different length of50mm. Take the total of the two counts, divide by10, and record the hill count as the number of peaks per10mm. The limits for hill count shall be as a

、greed between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Appropriate values for a given paper will depend upon the density and substance of the base paper, the amount of stretch and various details of the crping operation, and can vary from less than8to more than20per10mm. In general, the hill count will i

、ncrease with decreasing paper density or substance, or with increasing elongation at break.BS 5626-3.3:1982 BSI 09-1999 3 Table I Requirements for Class3 Crpe paper Property Test method in Part2 Type Unit Requirements Remarks Tensile strength expressed as extended tensile index 5 3.1 3.2 Extended te
