It supersedes BS 6526:1984, which is withdrawn. The transport by hand of hot items in a domestic kitchen is always a h

、azardous operation. The purpose of this standard is to specify oven gloves with thermal insulation properties and dimensions that allow for the safe transport of these hot items, thus reducing the ever-present risk of accident in the domestic kitchen. Annex A is normative and Annex B is informative.

、 Introduction The main factors that this standard seeks to address are those associated with the safety of domestic oven gloves. Major considerations in the assessment of these factors are that the rate of heat penetration through the insulating material adequately protects the hand and wrist area,

、and that there is continued satisfactory performance of the gloves after washing. As hand sizes vary, the standard allows for differing sizes of oven gloves to be produced, by specifying only minimum dimensions of gloves. The minimum inside length for gloves joined in pairs is shorter than that for

、single gloves, as the full length inside could restrict movement and hence reduce safety. The major task experienced by the committee was to develop a test to assess the thermal insulation properties of oven gloves. The method that was developed (see Annex A) uses a brass cylinder which is heated to

、 150 C before being placed on the oven glove. This particular cylinder was chosen in an attempt to reproduce the contact pressure that may be exerted when removing a hot item from a domestic oven. Whilst domestic ovens can reach temperatures of approximately 250 C, a cylinder temperature of 150 C is

、 specified for the test. When developing the test procedure, it was found that the use of higher temperatures did not significantly alter the performance characteristics of the glove material, although the temperature increased. Thus, the performance figures specified for rise of temperature are rel

、evant for this test procedure using a 150 C cylinder and are not necessarily the same as the actual temperature rise experienced by the user. The method of test specified in BS 6526:1984 was found to have inadequate inter-laboratory reproducibility. This test method has been revised in the current s

、tandard to tighten the tolerances and procedure to reduce the variability. After inter-laboratory trials it was established that there still remains a variability of 4 C within the test. This variability has been taken into account when calculating the results of the test. The procedure for extended

、 testing, where a single failure is recorded has been retained in this version of BS 6526, recognizing the inherent variability of textile materials. In preparing this standard, the results were considered for a range of different oven gloves and due note was taken of the results obtained in selecti

、ng the performance criteria. These criteria have been chosen so that oven gloves conforming to this standard possess acceptable thermal insulation as determined by a user trial. A user trial was conducted in which a panel of users assessed the insulation performance and dimensions of a range of oven

、 gloves. The results correlated well with those obtained from the test that was developed, and account was taken of the results when specifying the performance requirements in this standard. The requirement of 4.2 for minimum ironing temperature is intended to ensure some protection against material

、 failure when heated. 1 Scope This British Standard specifies minimum dimensions and performance requirements for materials and thermal properties for oven gloves used in domestic situations together with requirements for marking. 29、 are generally employed for short-term contact, e.g. when transferring hot articles from a domestic oven to a nearby surface, and are not intended for prolonged contact with hot items. 3.2 sample single glove or mitt from which a specimen(s) will be cut for testing NOTE For gloves that are reversibl

、e, each side of the glove constitutes a sample. 3.3 specimen material cut from a sample on which a single thermal test is carried out 4 Construction and performance 4.1 General After being washed and flat dried once in accordance with BS EN 26330: programme 4A or according to the care instructions s

、upplied, and then conditioned as described in BS EN 20139, the oven gloves shall conform to 4.2 to 4.5. 4.2 Materials 4.2.1 Safe ironing temperature When tested in accordance with BS 7305: a) The safe ironing temperature of the oven gloves shall be not less than 220 C. b) There shall be no sticking

、of the surface to the block. c) Any discoloration shall be reported in the test report (see BS 7305 and Clause A.8 of this British Standard). 4.2.2 Multi-layer construction oven gloves When touched and observed, the layers of multi-layer construction oven gloves shall not separate or deform such tha

、t the glove comes apart and the insulation shall be uniform within the total pockets or palm area. NOTE 1 Poorly stitched gloves may easily pull apart. Some non-woven insulation materials are known to ball after washing, leaving uninsulated patches. This may occur when inadequate provision has been

、made to retain the material in its as-purchased position within the oven glove. NOTE 2 Annex B provides design recommendations for domestic oven gloves. 4.2.3 Thickness of material covering the back of the hand of non-reversible gloves For oven gloves that are not reversible, the minimum thickness o

、f material covering the back of the hand shall be 1.5 mm, when measured as described in BS EN ISO 5084, using a pressure of 1.0 0.01 kPa using a 200 020mm 2 foot. 4.3 Thermal insulation When tested in accordance with Annex A, the temperature rise after 10 s shall not be greater than 30 C. Oven glove

、s that are reversible, i.e. where either side can be used as protection for the palm of the hand, each side shall be tested as a separate sample.BS 6526:1998 BSI 1 October 2002 3 4.4 Dimensions The minimum dimensions for oven gloves shall be as follows. a) Gloves joined in pairs: 190 mm for the insi

、de length of thermal insulation of the pocket; 140 mm for the inside width of the pocket measured at the cuff edge; and 400 mm for the length of joining material. (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). b) Single gloves: 240 mm from the inside finger tip of the glove to the cuff edge; 140 mm for the inside wid
