、A phase can consist of one substance or several substances. A phase consisting of several substances is called a mixture. Gaseous mixtures are also referred to as gas mixtures, liquid mixtures also as solutions, solid mixtures also as mixed crystals or as solid solutions. Note. The terminology in th

、is standard can be applied as appropriate to systems with more than one phase, for example heterogeneous mixtures. Similarly, these concepts can where appropriate be generalized in cases where a compound is being reduced to its elements or to other com- pounds. 1.2 To describe the composition of a m

、ixture, one of the following quantities can be used for a portion i of each separate substance of the total of 2 substances: mass mi; volume 6; amount of substance ni; number of particles Ni. Vi is the volume occupied by the portion of substance i before mixing at the existing temperature, under the

、 existing pressure and in the existing state of aggregation. The following relationship exists between the number of particles Ni and the amount of substance ni: N, = NA n, where NA is Avogadros constant. Note I. To specify unambiguously a portion of substance and the nature of the substance concern

、ed, two indications will generally need to be given, .e. the subscript for the portion of substance and also an indication of the substance or the type of particle. If the substance or type of particle is stated explicitly, the associated name or the associated symbol is written in brackets on the l

、ine, for example mi (ash) or ni (H2SO4). In this standard, the subscript i, used for specifying a portion of substance, also characterizes the particular substance, since, if the composition of a mixture is considered, there is a definite relation- ship between the portions and the associated sub- s

、tances. Note 2. The volume Vishould only be used for describing the composition of the mixture provided that the portion of substance i before mixing and the mixture are both in the same state of aggregation. 1.3 To describe the composition of the mixture, with- out reference to its amount, quotient
