19、2012 (E) 4 1 Scope This European Standard specifies a qualitative classification and grade designations for felled round timber of poplar in the form of long poles or logs. The classifications describe quality classes of round timbers for which the intended use is not known. This classification is a

25、ng principles Each long pole, log or portion of a round timber individualized by a theoretical crosscut point, is qualified according to its dimensions and to the presence, size, and distribution (e.g. concentration) of specific features. 4.2 Designation of grades Standardized designation of classes
26、 includes 3 characters, the last one separated by a dash: DIN EN 1316-2:2013-01 EN 1316-2:2012 (E) 5 the first and second characters are the genus initial and first letter in Latin; the third character indicates the quality class. The classification of poplar is divided into three quality classes: P
27、o-A is an exceptional quality class; Po-B is a normal quality class; Po-C is a quality class, which includes long poles, logs or portions of long poles not permitted in the other quality classes. For class Po-C, more than 40 % of the volume of the wood shall be useable. 4.3 Features to be taken into
28、 account for the classification Table 1 gives the features taken into account in this classification and these shall be measured according to EN 1309-2, EN 1310 and EN 1311. A long pole, log or portion of round wood shall be downgraded by its failure to meet the requirements of any single feature. L
29、ength and diameter shall be measured using the method stated in EN 1309. A culling may be specified by contract for the following features: bark pocket, burl, buckle, felling shake, shear, dote, rot, canker, carbonized wood, scar, foreign bodies, mistletoe, bird peck, dry side.
