、PE - POLARITY OF MAGNETIZATION 1 Scope This International Standard applies to audio recording and processing, and gives requirements for the preservation of signal polarity, together with methods of test which are not already included in other standards. It is based on, and consistent with, the rele

、vant text in IEC 268-2, and the connector applications standardized in IEC 268-1 1 and IEC 268-1 2. NOTE - Polarity characteristics of audio transducers are dealt with in IEC 268-4, IEC 268-5 and IEC 268-9. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions which, through re

、ference in the text, constitute provisions of this Intemational Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of ap

IEC 268-2: 1987, Sound system equipment - Part 2: Explanation of general terms and calculation methods Amendment 1 (1991) IEC 268-11: 1987

、, Sound system equipment - Part 11: Application of connectors for the interconnection of sound system components Amendment 1 (1989) Amendment 2 (1991) IEC 268-12: 1987, Sound system equipment - Part 12: Application of connectors for broadcast and similar use Amendment 1 (1991) 3 General For explanat

、ions of terms, general characteristics to be specified and methods of measurement, reference is required to IEC 268-2. The preservation of signal polarity in audio recording and processing equipment is important for two main reasons: a) the polarity relationship between channels of a stereo pair or

、multichannel set of signals is of fundamental importance in the correct re-creation of the sound field; 3404583 OLL35L3 377 H Page 4 EN 61213 : 1994 b) some audio signals are significantly asymmetrical, and polarity inversion can be detected, at least in critical listening conditions. 4 Preservation

、 of overall polarity in audio recording and processing equlpment 4. 1 Requirements When set for normal operation (see note), equipment with audio recording and reproduction facilities and equipment with audio processing facilities (except as described in 4.2) shall preserve polarity from inputs to o

、utputs, with reference to the signal polarities specified for connector applications given in IEC 268-1 1 and/or IEC 268-12. NOTE - For the purposes of his subclause, normal operation means that polarity inversion facilities and inverting inputs are not used. 4.2 Porarity inversion facilities The pr

、ovision of polarity inversion facilities (including self-contained “inverting units“) andlor inverting inputs is permitted, provided they are marked in accordance with the requirements of IEC 268-2. NOTE - Recordings made with deliberate polarity inversion of one channel (for artistic effect. for ex

、ample) should be labelled, or include a voice message, in explanation. 5 Direction of magnetization of analogue baseband audio recordings 5.1 Requirements The direction of magnetization due to a positive-going signal applied at a non-inverting input of the recorder shall be the same as the direction

、 of motion of the tape. It is, however, difficult to measure the direction of magnetization of the tape directly. The procedure adopted is therefore to specify that the polarity of response of the reproduce chain from the reproduce head to the output, measured in accordance with 5.2, shall be non-in

、verting, and then to specify that the polarity of signal connection for the record head shall be such that the requirements of 4.1 are met. The requirements of this subclause are then automatically met. 5.2 Method of test With reference to figure.1, an asymmetrical current is passed through a single

、 conductor placed close to the reproduce head, the relationship between the positive direction of current and the direction of tape travel being as shown in figure 1. A positive-going signal shall then be obtained at the positive polarity output terminal of the reproduce amplifier, as specified in I
