ItsupplementsISO2431:1993, PaintsandvarnishesDeterminationofflowtimebyuseofflowcups . Itspecifiesthegeneralproceduretobefollowedindeterminingthedynamicviscosity ofpaints,varnishesand re
23、latedproductsatarateofshearbetween9 000s 1 and12 000s 1 . Thevalueobtainedgivesinformationabouttheresistanceofferedbythematerialtobrushing,sprayingandroller coatingduringapplication. The method specified in this part of ISO 2884 is suitableforallpaintsandvarnisheswhethertheyareNewtonianin behaviouro

30、sultsagainstthos efrompreviouschecksand henceestablishingthefrequencyofcheckingrequired.Checkbycarryingoutthedeterminationasoutlinedin clause7,usingstandardrefinedmineraloilshavingNewtoniancharacteristicsandknownviscosities(usethree mineraloilswithviscositiescertifiedbyanapprovedlaboratoryandlyingbe
31、tween0,0 5 Pa sand0, 5 Pa s).Check theconesregularlyforwearandreplacethemiftheyshowsignsofscoringor,for conesthatarenottruncated, signsofflattening. Ifthereadingsobtaineddifferfromtheknownviscositiesofthestandar d oils by more than 5 %, the apparatus shall becheckedbyacompetentinstrumentengineerorre
32、turnedtothemanufacturerforadjustment. NOTE Siliconeoilsshouldpreferablybeavoidedbecauseoftheirtendenc y to contaminate instruments and because of the possibilityofshearthinningbehaviourathighshearrates. 6Checkingthetemperaturecontrol Tocheckthatthetemperaturedoesnotchangeduringthedetermination,carry
33、outthedeterminationasoutline d in clause7withthestandardoilofthehighestviscosityasindicatedbythescalereading. Allowtheviscometertorunwiththisoilfor 5 min,afterwhic hthereadingshallnothavedecreasedbymorethan 10 %.Ifthedecreaseismorethan1 0 %,theapparatusisunsuitable,assetup,forthedeterminatio n of vi
34、scosities athighratesofshearinaccordancewiththispartofISO2884. 7Procedure 7.1 Carry out thefollowingsequenceofoperationsinduplicateimmediatelyafterthepreparationofthesamplein accordancewithclaus e4,firstallowingtheapparatustowarmupi naccordancewiththemanufacturers instructions. Whentheviscositiesofp
35、roductsarebeingcompared,therateofshearshallbethesame.Th edeterminationshall becarriedoutat(23 0,2)Cunlessotherwiseagreed. 7.2 Adjustthetemperatureofthestationarypartoftheviscometerto(2 3 0,2) Cortoanalternativelyagreed temperature.Transferasuitableamountoftheproducttob e tested to the appropriate pa
36、rt of the viscometer, taking caretoavoidtheinclusionofairbubbles,andadjusttheotherparttothecorrectposition.Waitfortheprescribed time,dependentontheapparatusused,toallowthesampletoattaintheagreedtemperature. 7.3 Starttherotorandrecordthereadingonthescalewhenthereadingbecomessteady.Ifthereadin gdoesno
37、t becomesteadyafter15s,thereadingat15sshallberecordedandthelackofaconstantreadingshallbe mentionedinthetestreport. 7.4 Ifthereadingdoesnotdirectlyindicatetheviscosity,multiplythereadingbytheappropriateconversionfactor oruseanappropriatecalibrationcurvetoobtaintheviscosity.
