2、es, Inc. ADHESIVE, THERMOSETTING - FOR FRICTION MATERIALS ESA-M2G146-B NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE This specification defines a thermosetting nitrile-phenolic structural adhesive. 2. APPLICATION This specification was released originally for an adhesive used for bonding friction materials
3、 such as brake linings to metal shoes. The adhesive may be applied by the spreader coat method or by brushing. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Companys Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99
4、P1111-A). 3.1 VISCOSITY 25,000-75,000 cPs (Brookfield RVF at 25 +/- 1 C with #6 spindle at 10 rpm) 3.2 SOLIDS, min 39% (ASTM D 553 except heat 2 g for 4 h at 104 - 110 C) 3.3 SHEAR STRENGTH, average of five samples at each temperature (SAE J 840 c, samples prepared per para. 3.4 below) 3.3.1 Initial

6、3.4 SAMPLE PREPARATION AND TEST CONDITIONS FOR SHEAR STRENGTH EVALUATION 3.4.1 Strips and discs shall be made of low carbon steel. They may be reused by removing the old adhesive and refinishing the surfaces as described below as long as the thickness requirements of ASTM D 2182 are met by the refin
7、ished specimen. 3.4.2 The bonding surfaces shall be prepared as follows: . Heat strips and discs and chip off old adhesive. . Clean with a hot degreasing solvent such as trichloroethylene. . Finish bonding surfaces with 180 grit aluminum oxide cloth or by grit blasting. . Rinse with MEK and dry. . E
8、tch 5 - 10 min. at 20 C in equal parts (by weight) of 37% hydrochloric acid and water. . Rinse with distilled water after cold water wash and dry in warm air for 10 min. at 93 C. . Apply adhesive immediately to the freshly prepared surfaces. 3.4.3 Adhesive Application Spread the adhesive on the surf
9、ace of the disc and the appropriate portion of the strip using a brush. The wet film thickness shall be sufficient to produce a dry film thickness of 0.10 - 0.15 mm on each surface. Air dry for 30 min. minimum, then dry at 82 +/- 3 C for 30 min. After the specimens have cooled to room temperature, t
10、he bonding faces may be placed together. 3.4.4 Bonding Procedure The specimens shall be bonded at 0.70 MPa for 30 min. at temperature. Pressure distribution must be uniform. The heating rate at the bondline shall conform to Figure I. The bonded adhesive thickness shall be uniform and approximately 0
11、.051 mm thick with the disc and strip surfaces parallel. 3.5 STORAGE This adhesive, when stored in a closed container for 60 days or less at temperatures below 27 C, shall not increase more than the max allowable viscosity. 3.6 Assemblies utilizing this adhesive must conform to the adhesive manufact
12、urers recommendation for substrate preparation, adhesive thickness, and for drying and curing parameters. Alternate processing requires specific approval of the affected Product Engineering and Materials Engineering activities.
