2、RIMER SURFACER, LOW BAKE - ZINC DIE CASTINGS ESB-M6J97-B NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE The material defined by this specification is a high gloss low bake primer surfacer for use on zinc die castings. 2. APPLICATION This specification was released originally for material used as a primer un

3、der exterior quality acrylic baking enamels. As such, there is no primer-sealer coat required. It is usually specified on exterior, high visibility zinc die castings. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Companys

4、 Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A). 3.1 COLOR Gray to match ESB-M6J103. 3.2 VISCOSITY 25 - 35 s (FLTM BI 111-01) 3.3 STABILITY (FLTM BI 102-03) The material shall not jell, settle hard or increase in viscosity in excess of 10 s. 3.4 PREPARATION OF TEST PANELS All test p

5、anels shall be unfinished SAE 903 or 925 zinc die castings, zinc phosphate coated per PL 53 - 33 to conform to ESB-M3P1. 3.4.1 Primer - Enamel System (FLTM BI 103-02, METHOD “C“) . Apply the primer (0.00100 - 0.00125 in (25 - 32 m) dry film thickness) directly to panels using current approved materi

6、al as a control. . Bake panels for 15 min at 138 +/- 2 C. . ESB-M32J100 Black Holdout (paragraph 3.5.4) Water Immersion (paragraph

7、3.7.3) ESB-M32J100 White All other tests Note: The primer is not to be sanded prior to the application of enamel. 3.4.2 Primer Only Prepare as in paragraph 3.4.1 omitting the application of enamel. 3.5 APPEARANCE After preparing panels of the material under test and approved primer according to para

8、graph 3.4, the primer under test shall be equal to or better than current approved materials when tested under identical conditions for the following properties. 3.5.1 Color ESB-M6J103 gray (no darker than master color panel) 3.5.2 Gloss, min 40 (FLTM BI 110-01, 60 Glossmeter) Panels prepared per pa

9、ragraph 3.4.2. 3.5.3 Leveling The primer film shall level with a min of orange peel. The surface of the material under test shall be equal to or better than current approved material for smoothness when applied and baked under identical conditions. 3.5.4 Holdout There shall be no evidence of dulling

10、 or strike-in when enamel color coat is applied over unsanded primer surfacer. 3.6 FILM PROPERTIES 3.6.1 Hand Sanding Characteristics The primer shall water sand (using a new sheet of 400 grit paper for each panel) smoothly without clogging the paper and with a min of sand scratches. The material sh

11、all be equivalent in all respects to current approved primer when applied and tested under identical conditions. 3.6.2 Adhesion (FLTM BI 106-01) Test material versus current approved primer. Panels shall be prepared per paragraph 3.4 and shall show no evidence of chipping of the primer from the base

12、 metal or of the enamel from the primer. The adhesion shall be satisfactory and shall be equal to or better than currently approved material. 13、re panels according to paragraph 3.4 and test according to FLTM BI 007-01, using current approved primer for comparison, and ESB-M32J100 quality color coats. Chipping shall be no greater for the test material than for current approved primer and shall not exceed Figure #3. 3.7.2 Salt Spray, min 240

14、h (FLTM BI 103-01) Panels are prepared according to paragraph 3.4 with no blistering or more than 1/8 in (3 mm) corrosion, blister creepage or loss of adhesion from a scribed line. 3.7.3 Water Immersion, min 500 h (FLTM BI 104-01) Panels are prepared according to paragraph 3.4 with no blistering, lo

15、ss of gloss, or loss of adhesion. 3.7.4 Florida Exposure Panels prepared as in paragraph 3.4, scribed with an “X“ to bare metal and exposed in the Miami, Florida area, at 5 facing south for 12 months shall show no blistering, peeling or visible corrosion along the scribe marks more than 1/8 in (3 mm

16、) total width. 3.8 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 3.8.1 Weight Per Volume at 23 +/- 2 C 10.2 - 11.0 lb/gal (ASTM D 1475) (1.22 - 1.32 kg/l) 3.8.2 Non-Volatile, min 53% (FLTM BI 102-01) 3.9 TOXICITY The material shall be non-toxic and shall not cause skin rash or irritation (dermatitis) to exposed handlers in n

17、ormal production operations. Benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents are considered toxic and their use is strictly prohibited in compounding material to this specification. 18、MATION The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the requirements of this specification. 5.1 FLASH POINT, min 24 C (ASTM D 92) 5.2 FLAMMABILITY This material represents a potential fire hazard. The Manufacturing Engineering Department shall notify both the P

19、lant Security and the Safety Units of its presence in the Plant to assure that proper fire precautions are provided. The location in which it is used or stored shall be included in the notifications. 5.3 COMPOSITION 5.3.1 Pigment 60 - 70% by weight of non-volatile, consisting of prime pigments and i

20、nert fillers as required to provide the desired color and sanding characteristics. 5.3.2 Pigment Volume Concentrate (P.V.C) 32 - 37% 5.3.3 Vehicle 100% monobasic acid epoxy (Phenolic ether) modified with aldehyde amine resin. 5.3.4 Volatile Aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohol, or other non-toxic oxygen bearing solvents may be used to produce a satisfactory primer capable of being reduced to spraying viscosity with M-14J210, Special Thinner for Dual Purpose Enamel, or M-14J260, High Solvency Heavy Petroleum Naphtha.
