APPLICANT This specification was released originally for material for use on rubber, metal, glass and plastic, and is not intended to sati

、sfy the requirements of specialized greases, such as U-joint lubricant, steering lubricant, etc. It is not intended to limit general purpose lubricating grease to a specific material, but rather defines the performance of the entire system. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 GENERAL 3.1.1 Shall be of such composit

、ion that it will meet all requirements described in this specification. It must be capable of being used as packaged. 3.1.2 Shall have suitable characteristics for ease of application. If the material is an aerosol, it shall be dispensed rapidly, uniformly and shall have a minimum of spray-back. If

、the material is dispensed from a tube, the components must remain homogeneous and of gel-like consistency. 3.1.3 Shall tolerate some degree of contamination without a significant change in characteristics. 3.1.4 Shall resist leakage, dripping or throw-off from lubricated surfaces. 3.1.5 No objection

、able odor either during or after application. 3.1.6 Must be reasonably safe to apply and must meet all federal, state and local regulations. The material must be formulated to minimize health hazards due to toxic or otherwise injurious ingredients. 3.2 PERFORMANCE 3.2.1 Shall have the ability of for

、ming and maintaining a coating which prevents the entrance of corrosive or harmful material. ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESR-M13P4-A Page 2 of 5 Test Method: The determination of surface damage due to the inclusion of moisture by the material is tested by the following method: Steel panels ar

、e prepared according to FLTM BJ 6-1. Coat the panel uniformly with no more than 1/16 in (1.6 mm) of the lubricating material. Place in a humidity cabinet at 38 +/- 2 C for 168 h. No pitting and/or rusting are allowed. (Disregard any corrosion less than 1/4 in (6.4 mm) from edges of panel.) 3.2.2 Sha

Test Method: Water Washout Characteristics of Lubricating Greases (ASTM D 1264) Water Washout - 1 % maximum. 3.2.3 Shall remain semi-solid after application over a wide range of temperature, i.e. from -29 to 204 C. Test Methods 3.2.3.1 A

、pparent Viscosity of Lubricating Greases (ASTM D 1092) - Apparent viscosity modified for -29 C. 3.2.3.2 Dropping Point of Lubricating Grease (ASTM D 566) - Dropping Point 177 C minimum. 3.2.4 Shall be compatible with elastomer seals and shall have no detrimental effect on natural or synthetic rubber

、. Test Method: Change in Properties of Elastomeric Vulcanizates Resulting from Immersion in Liquids (ASTM D 471). Tests are conducted on standard samples of buna, butyl and natural rubber. An increase of 10 % in volume or weight is the maximum limit. Use a durometer for measuring a change in hardnes

、s. A 4 % change in hardness is the allowable limit. 3.2.5 Shall maintain a lubricating film after extended periods of use. Test Method: Film Strength Durability (Timken Machine). Spindle Speed: 800 rpm. Lever Arm Load: 10 lb (4.5 kg) Test Time: 5 h minimum. Coat Timken cup and block with 0.35 - 0.55

、 g of grease. Break in for 30 s with no load. When aerosol lubricants are tested, sufficient time must elapse after application to allow escape of propellant. ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESR-M13P4-A Page 3 of 5 3.2.6 Shall have no detrimental effect on exterior automobile finishes. Test Metho

、d: Prepare paint panels according to FLTM BI 3-2. Paint colors to be used are black, white and metallic blue in each of the following qualities: ESR-M2P100-A (both lacquer and enamel), ESB-M30J100-A and ESB-M32J100-A. To each of the twelve panels, apply the lubricant to a 2 in2 (13 cm2) area. Expose

、 the test panels in a convection oven at 70 +/- 2 C for 24 h. Remove the panels, wash off the grease. Observe the effects on painted surfaces. 3.2.7 Shall retain its “parting action“ at low temperatures. Test Methods: 3.2.7.1 Place the following items in contact with each other: . A 5 in (127 mm) le

、ngth of flat, sponge rubber door gasket material lubricated with the material being tested, and . A smooth paint panel prepared according to FLTM BI 3-2. Paints to be used are ESB-M30J100-A and ESB-M32J100-A quality materials. A 2,000 g weight is then applied to keep the above surfaces in contact. T

、he assembly is placed in a cold box at -32 +/- 2 C for 24 h. The assembly is then removed from the cold box and the parts separated. If the lubricant provides proper parting action, the pieces should separate easily. 3.2.7.2 Repeat above test with the following modification: Before assembly is place

、d in cold box, separate the gasket and panel. Cover 75 % of the gasket contact area with water. Place the lubricated surface of the gasket in contact with the wetted area of the panel and apply a 2,000 g weight to keep the surfaces in contact. Place assembly in cold box as above. The introduction of

、 water should cause no change in parting action. 3.3 STORAGE AND STABILITY 3.3.1 Must be capable of storage without any detrimental effect for an extended period of time. Test Method: Oxidation Stability of Lubricating Greases by the Oxygen Bomb Method (ASTM D 942). This method is used to determine

、the resistance of lubricating grease to oxidation under static conditions. A drop of 15 psi (103 kPa) or less in 300 h is considered satisfactory.
