2、Application This method is used to determine the resistance to flotation of conventional metallic paints. Apparatus Required 1. Automatic Spray Equipment - Spraymation Model 9148 a. Spraygun to be De Vilbiss ABG Series 501 Gun, Needle and Tip - AV15EX with No. 30 air cap, or suitable equivalent. b.

3、Air pressure - 450 kN/m2 c. Number of coats - 3 d. Flash-off between coats - 2 minutes 2. Spraybooth - Air Conditioned a. Airflow over panel rack must be 45-60 m/min b. Booth temperature must be 24 +/- 2 C c. Relative Humidity must be maintained at 45 - 64 % 3. Laboratory forced air oven capable of

4、maintaining a constant temperature of 180 +/- 1 C. 4. Macbeth Color Matching Booth, or equivalent, with North Sky Daylight according to FLTM BI 109-01. 5. Thickness gauge - Permascope with constant pressure probe or approved alternative. 6. Test panels: Steel body skin panels with an Ra of 0.9 - 1.8

Prime, wet sand and dry test panels as described in FLTM BI 103-02. Mask one (1) edge of test panel to allow enamel

6、film thickness to be measured. 2. Reduce enamel under test to the recommended test viscosity using xylol as the paint solvent. 3. Establish Standard Spraymation settings such as fluid flow, lap distance, etc., such that the application of three (3) coats of enamel at an enamel dry film thickness of

7、45 - 50 microns meets all paint appearance requirements. These settings will then be the standard settings for the paint under test. The flash-off after the final coat should be five (5) minutes with the panel kept in a horizontal position. Note: It may be necessary to alter slightly the standard se

8、ttings to achieve paint appearance requirements if the evaluation is carried out over more than one (1) day. 4. Test Variations in Spraymation Settings Setting 1 Setting 2 Setting 3 a. 9、dard settings established in Para 3 above. Note: Fluid flows to be established using xylol and increases in fluid flow are also to be made using xylol. Test Variations Flux Flow FF2 = FF1 + 20 mL/min FF3 = FF1 + 40 mL/min Gun Distance GD1 = “B“ Setting, where “B“ = Constant distance for three (3) co

10、ats. GD2 = “C“ Setting, where “C“ = two (2) coats furthest from panel, one (1) coat close to panel. GD3 = “A“ Setting, where “A“ = two (2) coats close to panel, one (1) coat furthest from panel. 11、 Speed - sec TS2 = TS1 - 4 TS3 = TS1 - 8 Spray a test panel using each of the three (3) variations of the three (3) spraymation settings and bake each panel according to the Engineering Materials Specification requirements. The total number of test panels will be (27). The Standard Spraymation setti

12、ngs (111 series) should be checked during this multiple panel exercise to check the consistency of the equipment and material, and test environment. Evaluation Flotation is the term given to poor aluminum pigment orientation of metallic paints. It manifests itself in the form of dark patches or mott

13、ling on the test panel or sometimes black edging of the test panels. Compare each test panel with the standard setting panel (series 111) for the presence of flotation, by viewing in the Macbeth color cabinet. A subjective assessment of the degree of flotation, e.g. slight, medium or heavy should be

14、 made and the results charted on the Flotation Evaluation Chart by coding the test variants which give flotation. The enamel dry film thickness should also be recorded on the Flotation Evaluation Chart. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled p
