2、ine the bond strength of trim adhesives. A test fabric is bonded to a steel panel with an adhesive. After a specified controlled air dry period, the assembly is pulled in a t esting machine to measure the shear adhesion strength of the adhesives. Apparatus Required Stopwatch or Interval Timer Test P

3、anels The test panels are C.R. L.C.O.H. steel body stock, 0.035 - 0.042 inch thick. A suitable size panel is 3 x 5 inches. Th e panels shall be either phosphate coated (Bonderite 37, Parker Rustproof, Inc., or equivalent) or phosphate coated, primed and enameled, conforming to current production pro

4、cesses as indicated by the adhesive material specification. Note: Enameled tes t panels shall not be less than 24 h old or more than 2 weeks old when used with this test method. Test Fabric The fabric used in this test shall be 1 x 5 inch strips of the type indicated by adhesive material specificati

5、on. The 5 inch dimension of the f abric shall be parallel to the warp direction of the material. Roller A roller weighing 500 gm is required for bonding the fabric to the adhesive coated panel. A steel roller 1 3/4 inch in diameter and 1 5/8 inch long, chromium plated, is satisfactory fo r this purp

6、ose. Round Scraper A scraper similar to the one shown in Figure 1 is used to spread the adhesive on the steel panel. Guillotine Scraper The apparatus similar to the one shown in Figure 1 is used to spread the adhesive on the test fabric. Oven A mechanical convection oven capable of maintaining a tem

Testing Machine A testing machine (Scott Tester or equivalent) is required for pulling the test assemblies. The machine shall have a low r

8、ange capacity of 0 - 100 lbs with an accuracy of 0.5 % of the range. The speed of the moving jaw shall be 1 inch/minute. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosph ere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity fo

9、r not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Single Coat Adhesion Method (Adhesive Applied Only to Metal Panel) 1. Agitate the adh esive thoroughly before testing. Keep the adhesive covered during the test to minimize possible solve

10、nt loss. 2. Use care in handling the steel panels to avoid contaminating the bonding surface with dirt or fingerprints. 3. Place a daub of the test adhe sive centered 1 1/2 inch above the 3 inch edge of the test panel and scrape the adhesive down the panel to obtain a wet film thickness of 0.010 inc

11、h. Start the stopwatch immediately after completing this operation. 4. Allow the adhesive film to air dry as required by the material specification “Open Assembly Time“. 5. Place a strip of test fabric over the adhesive film so that one square inch of the materials are bonded together. Roll immediat

Place the assembly in the testing machine. The panel should be gripped in the upper jaw so that the fabric is in direct vertical alignme

Ten minutes after the rolling operation, begin pulling the assembly at the rate of 1 inch/minute until failure. 8. Note and r ecord the highest load reading o

Place a piece of the test fabric on the base of the guillotine and under the scraper blade. Coat the fabric with adhes ive over an area of slightly

16、 more than one square inch and immediately draw it through the guillotine. The fabric is drawn against the edge of the blade that is not beveled and must be pulled parallel to the base in order to insure that the blade is beari ng solidly against the fabric. Simultaneously with the coating of the fa

Start the stopwatch immed iately after completing this operation. Note: It is important that the coating of the fabric and the metal panel occu

Allow the coated materials t o air dry as required by the material specification “Open Assembly Time“. 4. Place the coated fabric over the adhesive film on the test panel so that one square inch

Complete three of the above tests for each “Open Assembly Time“ indicated in the adhesive specification and report the average of the values obtained for each open assembly time. Shear Adhesion After Aging 1. Prepare three test assemblies, using the appropria

22、te procedure described in the foregoing sections and the shortest “Open Assembly Time“ which gives the highest strength as indicated by the adhesive material specification. 2. Condition the assembly for a minimum of 16 h at 72 +/ - 5 F. 3. Place the assemblies in a mechanical convection oven at 158

23、+/ - 2 F for two weeks. 4. Cool to 72 +/ - 5 F and hold at this temperature for one hour. Place the assembly in the testing machine. The panel should be gri pped in the upper jaw so that the fabric is in direct vertical alignment with the lower jaw. Place the fabric end of the assembly in the lower

24、jaw and take up any slack in the fabric without applying a load. 5. Pull at the rate of 1 inch/minute until fai lure and report the average of the tests. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
