2、mine the abrasion resistance of sound deadeners and undercoating materials which are used on the underside of automobile bodies. A primed steel panel coated with the test material is subjected to a bombardment of wet steel shot to simulate actual road conditions wherein stones, pebbles, etc. are thr

5、x with a hopper on one end and a slot for inserting an abrasion test panel in the other end. Steel shot mixed with water is poured into the hopper where a stream of air propels the shot onto the test panel inserted in the opposite end. Steel Shot 50 Ibs of SAE 780 shot with the following additional

7、d. Hard ness 90 % to be Rc 42 - 48. 2 quarts of water containing 10 g of potassium dichromate is used to prevent rusting of the shot in storage. Steel Test Panels The panels used in this test shall be 5 x 12 x ,036 - ,042 inch flat C.R.L.C. steel with a 1/4 inch hole in the center of one end for han
8、ging the panel when spraying with deadener. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 OC and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unle
9、ss otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Prepare three test panels with deadener or undercoating, following Steps 1 through 10 where applicable under FLTM BV 001-01. Use Method “A, “B“, or “C“ etc. as designated by the Engineering specification. Where masking is called for in Step No. 4, the top and bot
10、tom 3 inches of the panel are masked before applying the deadener. 2. Condition all panels for 24 h at 100 +/- 2 OF and 98 +/- 2 % relative humidity. Note: If a humidity cabinet is not available, the panels may be supported over a few inches of water in a sealed container placed in an oven at 1 O0 +
11、/- 2 OF for 24 h. 3. Cool each panel to 23 +/- 2 OC and insert in the Gravelometer as shown in the sketch. 4. Main line air supply should be at 80 psi prior to and during the test. Open the line valve and adjust so that air flow through the Flowmeter indicates a volume of 80 CU ft min is obtained. N
12、ote the open line pressure at the indicating gage. This pressure should indicate 9 - 12 psi, however, it is not critical if all hoses and fittings are standard. 13、 shot, collecting the spent shot in a pail directly below the test panel, and repeat the cycle four additional times. 6. Invert each test panel and repeat five cycles of abrasion with the wet shot. 7. Rinse the test panels in clean tap water to remove all loose particles of test material, dry for on
14、e hour at 21 5 +/- 5 OF, cool and weigh. 8. Calculate the percent retention as follows: x 100 = % retention B-A Where A = Weight of uncoated panel B = Weight of coated panel before abrasion C = Weight of coated panel after abrasion 9. Report the minimum retention of the three panels tested. Chemical
