、 method determines the sealing performance of formed-in-place gasket eliminator adhesives. It involves the use of rigid metal flanges, assembled with and without shims to create specific gaps. Materials and Apparatus Required Air Pressure or Nitrogen Source Capable of supplying 0 - 1350 kPa. Pressur

、 3 Copyright 2000, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. Test Fixture Preparation 1. Clean the test fixture using solvent. 2. Abrade the sealing surfaces against a 220 grit aluminum oxide abrasive paper on a hard flat surface, until a uniform finish is attained. 3. Clean the abraded fixture and store in de

、siccator (reprocess if not used within 72 h). Procedure 1. From the master adhesive sample, draw off a sufficient quantity of adhesive to perform all required performance tests. The adhesive shall be applied using a disposable pipet, an applicator stick or other suitable means that will ensure compl

、ete coverage of the application area. To prevent contamination, material reserved for performance testing shall not be returned to the master sample for retaining purposes. 2. Secure the lower half of the test fixture in a vise. 3. Apply sufficient material to the lower flange to completely fill the

、 pressure annulus area. Care should be taken to ensure that there are no entrapped air pockets which might result in a leak path. Excessive material should not be applied, since it will create a fillet in the pressure annulus, thereby affecting test results. 4. For various gap sizes, install the app

、ropriate size shim onto the center of one flange after applying a small amount of sealant to each side of the shim. This prevents pressure loss through the assembly bolt hole. 5. Assemble the top half of the fixture onto the lower half, being careful to contact the material evenly. Once the top fixt

、ure has been set in place, do not attempt to move it. 6. Torque the fixture halves together with 27 N-m of applied torque. 7. Attach the air pressure source to the fixture and gradually increase the pressure to 1350 kPa. 8. Place the fixture under water for 10 s and observe for air bubbles flow from

、 fixture. 9. Record the result. 10. Disassemble the fixture and clean as in Test Fixture Preparation. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
