4、 Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This method covers a procedure for determining the percent phosphorus in oils. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Apparatus per ASTM D 1091 and ASTM E 30. 2.2 250 ml beaker. 2.3 300 ml Erlenmeyer flask. 3.

5、0 MATERIAL 3.1 Materials per ASTM D 1091 and ASTM E 30. 3.2 Ammonium Hydroxide, concentrated (NH4OH). 3.3 Nitric Acid, concentrated (HNO3). 3.4 Potassium Permanganate, saturated solution (KMnO4). 3.5 Tartaric Acid solution - 200 grams per liter. 3.6 Ammonium Molybdate solution (acidic) - Reagent #10

6、2 per ASTM E 50. 3.7 Distilled water. 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Accurately weigh a 2 gram sample of oil into a 250 ml beaker and oxidize per ASTM D 1091. 4.2 After the oxidation is completed, cool sample and dilute with H2O to 50 ml. Transfer solution to 300 ml Erlenmeyer flask, washing beaker well with hot

7、 H2O, and dilute to 150 ml. (If lead or barium is present, as indicated by a precipitate, filter the sample into a 300 ml flask and wash well with water.) 4.3 Make the sample alkaline, as indicated by phenolphthalein, with concentrated NH4OH: bring it back to acidity with concentrated HNO3 then add

8、3 ml excess HNO3. 4.4 Oxidize the sample with 7 to 10 ml saturated KMnO4 solution and boil gently for 20 to 30 minutes. 4.5 Dropwise, add sufficient tartaric acid solution to dissolve the precipitate; then boil a few minutes to expel the oxides of nitrogen (until solution is clear). 4.6 Cool sample

9、slightly and add 50 ml of ammonium molybdate solution, shake and allow precipitate to settle for 2 hours. 4.7 Filter through a close texture paper and complete the determination of phosphorus by the alkalimetric method per ASTM E 30. 5.0 REPORT Report percent phosphorus in sample.
