、e Notice: Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This is a method for determining the chip resistance of a dry film of paint. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Recirculating oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 49 3C (120F 5F) 2.2 Tooke
、 paint inspection gauge with 10X cutting tip; available from P.N. Gardner Co., 316 N.E. First St., Pompano Beach, Florida 33061-6688. 3.0 MATERIAL 3.1 Bonderite CD-10 or Bonderite 958 zinc phosphated steel panels, 100 x 150 mm or 100 x 300 mm (4 x 6 or 4 x 12 inch), available from Advanced Coatings
、Technologies, 273 Industrial Drive, Hillsdale, Michigan 49242. 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Prepare two panels using the procedure specified for the applicable paint grade as per CEMS Test Method GT-13, Panel Preparation. 4.2 For Grades -32, -32HS, age the panels for 72 hours in a recirculating oven at 49 3C (
、120F 5F), remove panels and cool to 21 - 27C (70F - 80F). 4.3 Using the Tooke gage with 10X cutting tip, make a single cut or scribe approximately 3 inches long through the paint film and into the metal substrate. The cut should be made in a single pass and must go through the paint film, and into t
、he substrate. 4.4 Examine the paint film along the cut with the unaided eye for evidence of chipping. Compare the results to figures 1 and 2. Two additional re-tests in other locations on the panel are permissible, i.e., repeat the cut made in step #3 in order to obtain a satisfactory test. 4.5 Pass
、/Fail criteria are illustrated in figures 1 and 2. To be considered a pass, neither panel shall exhibit chipping behavior exceeding that shown in figure 1.
