Samples, when furnished, are solely for guidance and information to the contractor (see 6.3). Variations from this specification may appear in the sample in which case thi
21、s specification shall govern. 3.2 First article. When specified, the contractor shall furnish sample unit(s) for first article inspection and approval (see 4.3 and 6.2). 3.3 Material. 3.3.1 Basic cloths. * 3.3.1.1 Cloth, elastique, wool. The basic cloth for the Type I, Class 1 cap shall- be a wool e
22、lastique cloth conforming to Type I of MIL-C-3738. The cloth shall be dyed to match Green Shade 2212. * 3.3.1.2 Cloth, tropical, polyester/wool. The basic cloth for the Type I, Class 2 cap shall be a polyester/wool tropical conforming to Type III, Class 1 or 3 of MIL-C-21115. The cloth shall be dyed
23、 to match Khaki Shade 3729. * 3.3.1.3 Cloth, gabardine, wool. The basic cloth for the Type I, Class 3 cap shall be a wool gabardine conforming to Type I, Class 3 of MIL-C-10176. The cloth shall be dyed to match Khaki Shade 2115. * 3.3.1.4 Cloth, polyester/wool. The basic cloth for the Type I, Class
24、4 cap shall be a polyester/wool serge conforming to Type III, Class 3 of MIL-C-823. The cloth shall be dyed to match Blue Shade 3362. The standard sample piece number is 80353. * 3.3.1.5 Cloth, twill, polyester/cotton. The basic cloth for the Type II caps shall be a polyester/cotton cloth conforming
25、 to Class 1 of MIL-C-29127. The cloth shall be dyed to match Khaki Shade 3729 for the Class 5 cap and Blue Shade 3362 for the Class 6 cap. * 3.3.1.6 Cloth, twill rayon. The basic cloth for the lining pieces for the Type I caps (see 3.5.1) shall be a rayon twill cloth conforming to Class 1 of MIL-C-3
26、68. As an alternate, material conforming to MIL-C-44121 may be used. The cloth shall be dyed to approximate the shade of the basic fabric. 3.3.2 Sweatband. The sweatband for the Type I caps shall be made from either sheepskin leather conforming to MIL-S-3577 or from artificial leather conforming to
27、MIL-S-43993 dyed a brown shade to finish not less than 7/8 inch in width. When Class 4 caps are procured, the sweatband shall be black. 3.3.3 Sweatband cloth. The cloth sweatband for the Type II cap shall be made of the material specified in 3.3.1.5, cut 2 1/8 inches in width, unfinished. * 3.3.4 Th
28、read. The thread for seaming and stitching the caps shall be a cotton-covered or rayon-covered thread conforming to 2 or 3 ply, ticket No. 50 or 70 of MIL-T-43548. The polyester core, polyester covered thread is not allowed. As an alternate, the thread for seaming and stitching the caps shall be cot
29、ton thread conforming to Type I, IC2, Ticket Nos. A, and B, 3-ply of V-T-276. The dyed thread shall show fastness to light, laundering, wet-dry cleaning, and perspiration equal to or better than the standard sample when tested as specified in V-T-276 or MIL-T

When a standard sample is not available, the dyed thread shall show a minimum of “good“ fastness to light, laundering, wet-dry cleaning, and perspiration, when tested as specified in V-T-276 or MIL-T-43548. * 3.3.5 Labels. Each cap shall have a combination identification, size, and personal
33、label and a separate instruction label in accordance with 3.3.5.1 and 3.3.5.2. * 3.3.5.1 Combination label. Each cap shall have an identification, size, and personal label conforming to Type VI, classes 4 and 10, of ODD-L-20, except that the inscription shall be as shown below. The size of the label
34、 shall be not more than 1-1/2 inches in height and 2-1/2 inches in length. The height of the lettering except for the applicable size shall be 1/16 to 1/8 inch. The size lettering shall be not less than 1/4 inch. The label shall show fastness to drycleaning only when Type I caps are applicable and t
35、o laundering only when Type II caps are applicable. The cap shall be of a garrison style, having a three piece crown and a one pfece curtain turned up on the outside of the cap with the tapered Bends crossing at the front. The caps shall be lined or unlined and shall have a leather, artificial leather or basic clot
39、h sweatband, as specified. 3.4.1 Figures. Figures 1 and 2 are furnished for information purpases only. When inconsistencies exist between the written specification and the figures, the written specification shall govern. * 3.5 Patterns. Standard patterns to be used to cut the working patterns will b
40、e furnished by the Government (see 6.3). The working patterns shall be identical to the Government patterns. Neither-the Government patterns nor the working patterns shall be altered in any way. * 3.5.1 List of pattern parts. The caps shall be cut from material as specified, and in accordance with p

Stitch, seams, and stitching types, as specified in Ta
42、ble I shall conform to the requirements of FED-STD-751. Whenever two or more methods for seams or stitchings are given for the same operation, any one of them may be used. Seam allowances shall be maintained with seams sewn so that no raw edges, runoffs, twists, pleats, puckers, or open seams result
43、. All seams shall start and finish evenly. Thread tension shall be maintained so that there is no tight or loose stitching. Where stitch type 401 is used, the looper (underthread) shall be on the inside of- the cap. Ends of all seams prodvced by stitch type 401 shall be caught in Provided by IHSNot

The width of the safety stitch shall be 3/8 inch and the guides and knives on the safety stitch machine shall be set to trim only the ravell
45、ed ends of the fabric. 3.6.2 Stitches per inch. The minimum and maximum number of stitches per inch shall be as specified in Table I. * 3.6.3 Thread breaks and ends of seams. Ends of type 301 seams and stitchings, when not caught in other seams or stitchings, shall be backtacked not less than 1/4 in
46、ch. The ends of a continuous line of stitching shall be overlapped not less than 1/2 inch. Thread breaks (all stitch types) shall be secured by stitching back of break not less than 1/2 inch. Skipped stitches or thread breaks may be repaired by using 301 stitch type. The ends of type 401 stitching n
47、ot caught in other stitching or seams shall have a 1/2 to 3/4 inch chain extending from it. 3.7 Mankfacturing operations requirements. The caps shall be manufactured in accordance with the operation requirements specified in Table I. The contractor is not required to follow the exact sequence of ope
48、rations listed, provided that the finished cap is identical to that produced by following the sequence of operations as listed in Table I. 3.7.1 Shade and size marking. The component parts shall be marked or ticketed to insure a uniform shade and size throughout the cap. Any method may be used excep
49、t: 1. Metal fastening devices 2. Sewn-on tickets 3. Adhesive type tickets whose adhesive causes discoloration or whose adhesive mass adheres to the material upon removal of the tickets. The use of a rubber stamp, ink pad numbering machine, or pencil is acceptable provided the numbers are legible and are not visible on the outside of the cap. 3.7.2 Pressing. All pressing as required in Table I shall be performed with a steam iron or steam pressing machine.
