Foreword This standard for PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PE (polyethylene) nonmetallic riser U-type guards for use in protecting riser cables in utility poles is intended to: a) list dimensions and other significant requiremen

17、ts b) set forth some of the properties of these products c) assist in selecting and obtaining the proper product for a particular need. User needs have been considered through the development of this standard. NEMA TC 19 was approved by the NEMA Polymer Raceway Products Section. Approval does not ne

Section 2 Definitions and Abbreviations 2.1 Definitions Definitions of terms used in this standa

28、rd shall be in accordance with ASTM F412 or ASTM D883, or both. Abbreviations shall be in accordance with ASTM D1600 unless otherwise specified. nonmetallic riser U-type guard: a U-shape profile intended to cover and provide suitable mechanical protection for wires or cables, or both, attached direc

29、tly to utility poles in a vertical direction. qualification test: a non-repetitive evaluation conducted on an existing, modified or new product to determine acceptability. performance test: an in-plant test that is conducted on a given test frequency to determine whether a product is in accordance w

Section 3 General Requirements 3.1 Materials 3.1.1 Nonmetallic Riser U-type Guard The nonmetallic riser U-type guard shall be made from (1) poly vinyl chloride (PVC) plastic compound

31、, which meets the minimum cell classification of PVC 12333 as defined in ASTM D1784 or cell class 11321 as defined in ASTM D4396 or (2) PE (polyethylene) plastic compound, which meets the minimum cell classification of PE 335420 C or E as defined in ASTM D3350. Clean, reworked material of the same t

32、ype and grade from the manufacturers own facility may be used, providing that the riser U-type guard produced meets the requirements of this standard. 3.2 Dimensions and Lengths Dimensions of riser U-type guard shall meet the requirements of Table 1 or 2 when determined in accordance with 5.2 and Fi

33、gure 1. Bell lengths shall be in accordance with Tables 1 or 2. 3.2.1 Length The overall length, including the integral bell is commonly 5, 8 or 10 ft. 1 in. Other lengths are acceptable as agreed to by the parties involved. 3.3 Belled End The riser U-type guard shall have one end belled to provide

34、overlapping of individual sections. 3.4 Ribbed Surfaces The riser U-type guard shall be permitted to have a ribbed outer surface to provide better handling. 3.5 Workmanship The riser U-type guard shall be homogeneous throughout and free from visible cracks or other defects. It shall be as uniform as

35、 practicable in color, opacity, density, and other physical properties. 3.6 Inspections The manufacturer shall inspect the riser U-type guard at time of manufacture for compliance to dimensional and performance requirements and for freedom from defects as defined in 4.2. 3.7 Flammability Where flamm

Section 4 Performance Requirements 4.1 Qualification Tests 4.1.1 Sunlight Resistance Riser U-type guards shall be made from

44、a nonmetallic material that has been demonstrated to have sunlight resistance as defined in 5.4. 4.1.2 Flammability Where required, a riser U-type guard shall meet the flammability requirements of UL 651. 4.2 Performance Tests 4.2.1 Room Temperature Impact Resistance Ten 6-inch (150-mm) specimens on

45、 the surface of which there are no cracks, tears, or other imperfections shall be cut from finished lengths of each size of riser U-type guard to be tested. The specimens, the test apparatus, and the surrounding air shall be in thermal equilibrium with one another at a temperature of 73.4F 3.6F (23C

46、 2.0C) during the test. The test apparatus and method shall be described in 5.3. 4.2.2 Low Temperature Impact Resistance Ten 6-inch (150-mm) specimens on the surface of which there are no cracks, tears, or other imperfections shall be cut from finished lengths of each size of riser U-type guard to b

47、e tested. The specimens shall then be conditioned at the temperature specified in Tables 5 and 6 for 1 hour fully submerged in a liquid medium or 5 hours in a temperature controlled cold chamber. The test apparatus shall be at the ambient temperature of the test area. The samples shall be removed fr

48、om the cold chamber and tested within a maximum of 15 seconds in accordance with 5.3. NEMA TC 19-2017 Page 8 2017 by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. Section 5 Test Methods 5.1 Conditioning, Test Conditions, and Sampling 5.1.1 Conditioning Test Specimens When conditioning is required, the test specimens shall be conditioned in accordance with Procedure A in ASTM D618. 5.1.2 Test Conditions Tests shall be conducted at ambient temperature of the test area unless otherwise specified. 5.1.3 Sampling Samples shall be selected at random. 5.2 Dimensions 5.2.1 N
