2、port Building (OSB) I, proprietary elevators were acquired when they were not needed, because proprietary elevators are more expensive to install and maintain the elevator acquisitions should have been nonproprietary. When a buying a product the requirements for the product should be reviewed. Descr
3、iption of Driving Event: All five elevators in the OSB I at the KSC are proprietary, even though proprietary was not required. All other elevators at the Launch Complex 39 area had been upgraded and were nonproprietary. A minor modification to the OSB I elevators (such as installing five limit switc
4、hes and reprogramming five proprietary elevators) was quoted at $35,000.00. The same work was quoted at approximately $2500.00 for nonproprietary elevators. Lesson(s) Learned: Parts and maintenance costs on proprietary elevators are substantially higher than for nonproprietary systems. On occasion,
5、procurements fail to specify nonproprietary elevators. In those instances, contractors sometimes bid proprietary installations. Because proprietary elevators are more expensive to install and maintain and because proprietary designs are not required at KSC, all future elevator installations should b
6、e nonproprietary. Recommendation(s): Do not procure proprietary elevator systems. Review requirements and consider cheaper options when making a purchase.
