SCOPE1.1 FormThis specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy stee

6、l in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock.1.2 ApplicationThese products have been used typically for parts to be carburized requiring high minimum core hardness with wide range in sections 0.375 inch (9.5 mm) and under in thickness, but usage is not limited to such applic

7、ations. The core may or may not be machinable after hardening.2. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS3.1 CompositionShall conform to the percentages by weight shown in Table 1, determined by wet chemical methods in accordance with ASTM E 350 or by spectrogr

16、or Least Distance Between Parallel SidesCold finished having tensile strength not higher than 125 ksi (860 MPa) or hardness not higher than 262 HB, or equivalent (See 8.2).3.2.1.2 Bars Over 0.500 Inch (12.70 mm) in Nominal Diameter or Least Distance Between Parallel SidesHot finished and annealed, u

17、nless otherwise ordered, having hardness not higher than 229 HB, or equivalent (See 8.2). Bars ordered cold finished may have hardness as high as 248 HB, or equivalent (See 8.2).3.2.1.3 Bar shall not be cut from plate (Also see 4.4.2).3.2.2 ForgingsAs ordered.3.2.3 Mechanical TubingCold finished, un

Tubing ordered hot finished and annealed shall have hardness not higher than 99 HB, or equivalent (See 8.2).3.2.4 Forging StockAs ordered by the forging manufacturer.3.3 PropertiesThe product shall conform to th

19、e following requirements; hardness testing shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A 370:3.3.1 MacrostructureVisual examination of transverse full cross-sections from bars, billets, tube rounds and forging stock, etched in hot hydrochloric acid in accordance with ASTM E 381, shall show no pipe or

20、 cracks. The purchaser shall have written approval of the agreement from the cognizant engineering organization.3.3.1.1 If tubes are produced directly from ingots or large blooms, transverse sectio

22、ns may be taken from the tubes rather than tube rounds. Macroetch standards for such tubes shall be agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.3.3.2 Average Grain SizeShall be ASTM 5 or finer determined in accordance with ASTM E 112.3.3.3 HardenabilityShall be J1/16 inch (1.5 mm) = HRC 48 maximum and J4/16

23、 (6 mm) = 32 HRC minimum, determined on the standard end-quench test specimen in accordance with ASTM A 255, except that the steel shall be normalized at 1675 F 10 (915 C 6) and the test specimen austenitized at 1500 F 10 (815 C 6).SAE INTERNATIONAL AMS6299F Page 4 of 63.4 QualityThe product, as rec

24、eived by purchaser, shall be uniform in quality and condition, sound, and free from foreign materialsand from internal and external imperfections detrimental to usage of the product.3.4.1 Steel shall be aircraft quality conforming to AMS2301.3.4.2 Bars and tubing ordered hot rolled or cold drawn, or

25、 ground, turned, or polished, shall, after removal of the standard stock removal allowance in accordance with AS1182, be free from seams, laps, tears, and cracks open to the machined, ground, turned, or polished surface.3.4.3 Grain flow of die forgings, except in areas which contain flash-line end g

26、rain, shall follow the general contour of the forgings showing no evidence of reentrant grain flow.3.5 TolerancesShall be as follows:3.5.1 BarsIn accordance with AMS2251.3.5.2 Mechanical TubingIn accordance with AMS2253.4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 Responsibility for InspectionThe vendor of th

27、e product shall supply all samples for vendors tests and shall be responsible for the performance of all required tests. Purchaser reserves the right to sample and perform any confirmatory testing deemed necessary to ensure that the product conforms to specified requirements.4.2 Classification of Te

28、sts4.2.1 Acceptance TestsComposition (3.1), condition (3.2), macrostructure (3.3.1), average grain size (3.3.2), hardenability (3.3.3), frequency-severity cleanliness rating (3.4.1), and tolerances (3.5) are acceptance tests and shall be performed on each heat or lot as applicable.4.2.2 Periodic Tes

29、tsGrain flow of die forgings (3.4.3) is a periodic test and shall be performed at a frequency selected by the vendor unless frequency of testing is specified by purchaser.4.3 Sampling and TestingShall be as follows:4.3.1 Bars, Mechanical Tubing, and Forging StockIn accordance with AMS2370.4.3.2 Forg

30、ingsIn accordance with AMS2372.SAE INTERNATIONAL AMS6299F Page 5 of 64.4 Reports4.4.1 The producer of bars, mechanical tubing and forgings shall furnish with each shipment a report showing producer identity and country where the metal was melted (e. g., final melt in the case of metal processed by m

31、ultiple melting operations) and the results of tests for composition, macrostructure, hardenability and frequency-severity cleanliness rating of each heat and the average grain size of each lot, and stating that the product conforms to the other technical requirements. This report shall include the

32、purchase order number, heat and lot numbers, AMS6299F, product form, size (and/or part number, if applicable) and quantity from each heat. If forgings are supplied, the size and melt source of stock used to make the forgings shall also be included.4.4.2 Report the nominal metallurgically worked cros

33、s sectional size and the cut size, if different (See 3.2.1.3).4.4.3 The producer of forging stock shall furnish with each shipment a report showing the producer identity and country where the metal was melted (e. g., final melt in the case of metal processed by multiple melting operations) and the c

34、omposition, macrostructure, hardenability and frequency-severity rating of each heat. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat number, AMS6299F, size (and/or part number, if applicable) and quantity.4.5 Resampling and RetestingShall be as follows:4.5.1 Bars, Forging Stock, Mechanica

35、l TubingIn accordance with AMS2370.4.5.2 ForgingsIn accordance with AMS2372.5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY5.1 SizesExcept when exact lengths or multiples of exact lengths are ordered, straight bars and tubing will be acceptable in mill lengths of 6 to 20 feet (2 to 6 m), but not more than 10% of any sh

36、ipment shall be supplied in lengths shorter than 10 feet (3 m).5.2 IdentificationShall be as follows:5.2.1 Bars and Mechanical TubingIn accordance with AMS2806.5.2.2 ForgingsIn accordance with AMS2808.5.2.3 Forging StockAs agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.5.3 Protective TreatmentBars and mechanic

38、regulations pertaining to the handling, packaging, and transportation of the product to ensure carrier acceptance and safe delivery.6. ACKNOWLEDGMENTA vendor shall include this specification number and its revision letter in all quotations and when acknowledging purchase orders.7. REJECTIONMaterial

39、not conforming to this specification, or to modifications authorized by purchaser, will be subject to rejection.8.
