SAE INTERNATIONAL J2087 AUG2017 Page 9 of 10 6.8 Materials Requirements Plastic materials used in optical parts shall meet the requirements of SAE J576. 6.9 System Requirements 6.9.1 Location on Vehicle Requirement Lamps providing the DRLF shall be located a. on the front; b.

、 at the same mounting height, and symmetrically placed laterally relative to the centerline of the vehicle; c. not higher than 864 mm above the road surface, in the case of a high beam headlamp whose reduced luminous intensity is 3000 or more candelas at any location in the beam. 6.9.2 Area Requirem

、ents The dedicated DRL shall have a minimum unobstructed effective projected luminous lens area of 25 cm2. 6.9.3 Visibility When a DRL is installed on a vehicle, the centroid of the lens area through which the daytime running light function is provided shall be unobstructed and visible from any poin

DRLs shall be mounted symmetrically about the vehicle centerline facing to the front. The cumulative DRLs per side shall comply with the photometric requiremen

、ts. 7. GUIDELINES 7.1 Telltale 7.1.1 A DRLF telltale shall be located on the instrument panel or in the drivers forward field of view. The telltale shall provide a visual signal only when the DRL system is activated and tail lamps, side marker lamps, license plate lamp and front position lamps are n

、ot activated. 7.1.2 The telltale shall emit light and have a minimum projected illuminated area of 18 mm2. The minimum required illuminated area of the telltale shall be visible according to the procedures contained in SAE J1050. The steering wheel shall be turned to a straight-ahead position and in

、 the design location for an adjustable wheel or column. 7.1.3 A DRL telltale needs not be installed on vehicles when: a. DRLF is provided by low beam headlamps operating at full voltage and all exterior marking lamps are activated together with the DRL system or b. There is an automatic photocell sy

、stem switched from DRLF to night exterior lighting mode. If an automatic photocell system is used to activate the night exterior lighting mode, the light sensor shall activate the lamps when the ambient luminance is less than 1000 lux, on a horizontal surface, indicating dusk, night, or other reduce

、d light conditions. SAE INTERNATIONAL J2087 AUG2017 Page 10 of 10 7.2 Operation These guidelines apply to how the DRL lamps are used on the vehicle and are not part of the requirements. 7.2.1 The DRLF is to be activated without any switching by the operator (apart from the ignition switch). 7.2.2 No

、 other lights are required to be illuminated with the DRLF unless full intensity low beam headlamps are used as the DRLF. In this case, those exterior lamps that are required to be illuminated with the low beam headlamps shall be illuminated. 7.2.3 The DRLF is to be deactivated when the low beam hea

、dlamps and/or fog lamps are switched on. 7.2.4 For vehicles equipped with start-stop engine operation systems; once the Daytime Running Light Function has been turned on, the Daytime Running Light Function shall remain on, during each engine off period of the start-stop engine cycle. 7.3 Installatio

、n 7.3.1 DRL lamps should be spaced as far apart laterally as practicable and the dedicated DRL lamps should be mounted on the vehicle so the optical centers of the lenses are not less than 250 mm or more than 1500 mm above the road surface. 8. NOTES 8.1 Revision Indicator A change bar (I) located in

、 the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating areas where technical revisions, not editorial changes, have been made to the previous issue of this document. An (R) symbol to the left of the document title indicates a complete revision of the document, including technical revisions.
