The functional structure of this TSB is as follows: e Part 1000 to Part 1999-Guidelines for Service Providers These Parts are informative and discuss non-CDPD specific entities (such as Intermediate Systems), support services (such as directory - lOlO-iii Previ

Part 1000

、contains the detailed listing of all Parts of this TSB. Part 2000 to Part 2999-Guidelines for Manufacturers of CDPD equipment These Parts are informative and discuss such concerns as CDPD-specific entities (such as Mobile End Systems (M-ESs), Mobile Data Base Stations (MDBSs) and Mobile Data Interme

Part 3000 to Part 3999-Guidelines for the CDPD Network Information Center (NIC). These Parts

、are informative and describe the issues and procedures which must be addressed by an agency serving as a NIC on behaif of the CDPD community. e o 1 o1 (Hv Introduction TIAIEIAlTSB-87-1010 PART 1010 Intermediate System 1 I nt roduct ion 2 Intermediate Systems QSs) are off-the-shelf elements that rout

、e Internet Protocol (IP) and IS0 Connectionless Network Protocol (CLNP) datagrams between MD-ISS, and between MD-ISS and Fixed End Systems (F-ESs) (Figure 1010-1). ISS also may be used to route mobile data link frames that are encapsulated in CLNP datagrams between Mobile Data Base Stations (MDBSs)

、and MD-ISS. CDPD Intermediate System Architecture An ISS primary function is to receive Network Layer packets (i.e., datagramc. IKPDUs) on one interface and forward them out over another interface. An IS supports at least two physical interfaces which may be of the same or of different types. As Fig

、ure 1 O 1 O- 1 illustrates, multiple ISS are often configured so that there is more than one potential path between any two ISS. Although not illustrated, it is also common to configure multiple paths to/from a destination such as an F-ES or an MD-IS. 1010-1 TIAIEISBII-I o10 intermediate System FIGU

、RE 1010-1 Intermediate Systems E-interface External Network Service Provider Network A Service Provider Network B 2.1 Intermediate System Capabilities ISS have several capabilities that simplify the construction of complex networks: a. ISS incorporate routing algorithms with the following attributes

、: 1. Routing robustness with changing topologies The network of interconnected nodes should continue to operate even if specific links or nodes fail. Routing decisions should be based on the best route after considering network traffic, path speed and path reliability. It should be possible to remov

、e faulty components (due to either hardware or software failures) from the network and have the network routing tables adjust themselves accordingly. b. ISS have the capability to multiplex Network Protocol Data Units (NPDUs) from different sources onto a single link, and to de-multiplex WDUs from a

、 link and forward them onto possibly different links. This allows one link to serve multiple source-destination traffic streams. 2. Dynamic Routing 3. Self-stabilization 1010-2 ._ TIAEIARSB-87-1010 CDPD Intermediate System Architecture - C. d. e. f. ISS have the capability to connect to Local Area N

、etworks (LANs) (e.g FDDI, Ethernet, Token Ring) in addition to serial (point-to-point) links. This provides flexibility in attachment options and link speeds. ISS (e.g., multi-protocol routers) have the capability to forward many different t.ypes of NPDUs. The routers for CDPD must, at a minimum, be

、 able to forward IP and CLNP NPDUs. ISS may act as a firewail. For instance, ISS may prevent packets from being forwarded to specified destination addresses or from being accepted from specified source addresses. Alternatively, ISS may be set up to only forward packets with specified source addresse

、s or specified destination addresses. ISS support specific borderhoundaryhnter-domain routing protocols. These protocols allow routing policies to be established and enforced regarding the routing of transit traffic through a domain. These may be helpful with specific complex network configurations,

、 involving possibly multiple service provider networks and multiple external networks (Figure 1 O 10-2). Border routers in a CDPD Service Providers network and in some cases Areas within that network must, at a minimum, support Classless Interdomain Routing (CIDR). CIDR support for IP requires the u

、se of Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP4) and for CLNP it requires the use of Interdomain Routing Protocol (IDRP). 49、te Systems An IS used within CDPD falls into one of three classes: a. Mobile Data Intermediate Systems (MD-ISS), which are covered in b. Non-Border Intermediate Systems that are used within a domain for normal routing. These ISS route NPDUs between MD-ISS, between MDBS and MD-IS, between MDBSs, and to and from other ISS. Border Intermediate Systems, and F-ESs. c. Border Intermediate Systems (BISs) that implement inter-domain routing protocols (in addition to non-border routing protocols). BISs route NPDUs to and from MD-ISS, ISS, other BISs and F-ESs. A topic for future
