(UL) under its Follow-Up Service for this category within the limitations given below andin the Scope section of

6、 this Outline of Investigation. They are subject to revision as further experience andinvestigation may show is necessary or desirable.B. The observance of these requirements by a manufacturer is one of the conditions of the continuedcoverage of the manufacturers product.C. A product which complies

7、with the text of this Outline of Investigation will not necessarily be judged tocomply with the Outline of Investigation if, when examined and tested, it is found to have other featureswhich impair the level of safety contemplated by these requirements.D. A product that contains features, characteri

8、stics, components, materials, or systems new or differentfrom those covered by the requirements in this Outline of Investigation, and that involves a risk of fire orof electric shock or injury to persons shall be evaluated using appropriate additional component andend-product requirements to maintai

13、required by the Outline of Investigations of UL are inherently hazardous and adequatesafeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting such tests.OCTOBER 22, 2002SUBJECT 879B4INTRODUCTION1 Scope1.1 This outline of investigation covers the evaluation of polymeric enclosure systems

14、 that enclose thesplice between neon tubing electrode leads and a GTO cable and the GTO cable leading to the splice.1.2 These products are only covered as systems consisting of a neon electrode boot and GTO cable withintegral sleeve. This outline of investigation does not cover individual component

15、parts of a system.CONSTRUCTION2 General2.1 The neon electrode boot shall have been evaluated and found suitable for the application.2.2 The GTO cable with integral sleeve shall comply with the requirements in the Standard for Safety forGas-Tube-Sign and Ignition Cable, UL 814.2.3 The material used s

16、hall be a minimum of 0.559 mm (0.022 inches) thick.2.4 The over surface and through air spacing for a neon electrode boot shall be a minimum of 38.1 mm(1.5 inches) from the intended point of splice connection to the outer edge of the neon electrode boot inany direction.2.5 The insulating properties

17、of materials provided in the system which are relied upon to insulate,enclose and maintain water tight integrity, shall continue to act in these capacities after being subjectedto the required environmental conditions and tests. Continued compliance is to be determined bycompliance with the dielectr

18、ic voltage withstand test and examination for moisture that may have migratedto the interior parts of the enclosure system, as specified in this Outline of Investigation.2.6 Materials used in enclosure systems shall have been evaluated in accordance with the Standard forSafety for Polymeric Material

19、s Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C. Materials notpreviously evaluated shall be subjected to Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Qualitative InfraredAnalysis (IR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) for purposes of identification.2.7 Materials shall have a relative temperature i

20、ndex of a minimum of 105C (221F) and/or comply withthe temperature aging conditioning specified in 6.3.3.2.8 Materials shall have a flammability rating of a minimum of 5VA or be determined to meet thisflammability rating by the end of product testing in accordance with the Standard for Safety for Po

21、lymericMaterials Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C. End product flammability determination inaccordance with the Standard for Safety for Polymeric Materials Use in Electrical EquipmentEvaluations, UL 746C shall be conducted after ultraviolet radiation and temperature conditioning.2.9

22、Materials shall have a CTI rating or be tested to comply with a PLC of 2 or less.OCTOBER 22, 2002 SUBJECT 879B 52.10 Specimens in the natural and in the most heavily pigmented light and dark colors are to be provided.These are considered representative of the color range when test results are essent

23、ially the same. Inaddition, a set of specimens is to be provided in the heaviest organic pigment loading, unless the mostheavily pigmented light or dark color includes the highest organic pigment level. When certain colorpigments (for example, red or yellow) are known to affect flammability characte

24、ristics, they are also to beprovided.3 Systems for Dry and Damp Locations Only3.1 Ratings3.1.1 Systems are to be rated 5 kV, 2.5 kV ac to ground; 10 kV, 5 kV ac to ground; or 15 kV, 7.5 kV acto ground. Secondary circuits are to be rated for a maximum of 60 mA and for the diameter of the neontubing w

25、ith which the enclosure system is intended to be used.3.2 Markings3.2.1 The product shall be marked with the manufacturers name, trade name or trademark, voltagerating, and one of the following:a) GTO cable with integral sleeve (or neon electrode boot, as appropriate) Cat. No._ for use only with the

26、 specified neon electrode boot (or GTO cable as appropriate)in dry and damp locations.b) GTO cable with integral sleeve (or neon electrode boot, as appropriate) Cat. No._ for use only with _ (blank to be completed with the manufacturersname and catalog number or equivalent, of the neon electrode boo

27、t or GTO cable with integralsleeve, as appropriate) in dry and damp locations.3.3 Installation instructions3.3.1 Instructions shall be provided either with the neon electrode boot or with the GTO cable with integralsleeve. If provided with the neon electrode boot, the installation instructions shall

28、 be furnished inside eachsmallest unit container, or at least ten instruction sheets per carton of 75 neon electrode boots. If providedwith the GTO cable with integral sleeve, ten copies of the installation instructions shall be provided witheach reel of cable.3.3.2 The instructions shall include de

29、tails on the proper assembly of the splice and installation of theneon electrode boot and GTO cable with integral sleeve.3.3.3 The following statement shall be included:GTO cable with integral sleeve (or neon electrode boot, as appropriate) Cat. No. _for use only with _ (blank to be completed with t

30、he manufacturers name and catalognumber, or equivalent, of the neon electrode boot or GTO cable with integral sleeve, asappropriate) in dry and damp locations.OCTOBER 22, 2002SUBJECT 879B64 Systems For Dry, Damp and Wet Locations4.1 Ratings4.1.1 Systems are to be rated 15 kV, 7.5 kV ac to ground. Se

31、condary circuits are to be rated for amaximum of 60 mA and for the diameter of the neon tubing with which the enclosure system is intendedto be used.4.2 Marking4.2.1 The product shall be marked with the manufacturers name, trade name or trademark, voltagerating, maximum current rating, and one of th

32、e following as appropriate:a) GTO cable with integral sleeve (or neon electrode boot, as appropriate) Cat. No._ for use only with the specified neon electrode boot (or GTO cable with integralsleeve, as appropriate) in dry, damp and wet locations. See Installation Instructions orb) GTO cable with int

34、ctions4.3.1 Instructions shall be provided either with the neon electrode boot or with the GTO cable with integralsleeve. 39、entifying marking.h) Electrical rating of 15 kV, 7.5 kV to ground.PERFORMANCE5 Test for Systems for Dry and Damp Locations Only5.1 Retention test5.1.1 This test is to be conducted on systems of GTO cable with integral sleeve and straight through styleneon electrode boots. No retention test is requir

40、ed for systems of GTO cable with integral sleeve anddouble back style neon electrode boots.5.1.2 The test is to be conducted with the specimens and apparatus in thermal equilibrium with thesurrounding air at a temperature of 23 5C (73.4 9F). Specimens are to be in the as receivedcondition except tha

41、t they are to be cleaned of any surface debris.5.1.3 A 254-mm (10-inch) specimen of the GTO cable with integral sleeve is to be inserted inside theneon electrode boot for a distance of 152.4 mm (6 inches) with a 113.5 gram (4 ounce) weight attachedto the exposed end of the GTO cable with integral sl

42、eeve specimen.5.1.4 The neon electrode boot is then to be held upright from the opposite end with the GTO cable withintegral sleeve and weight hanging down, without constricting the GTO cable with integral sleeve in anyway. This condition is to be maintained for 60 seconds.5.1.5 During the 60 second

43、s the cable shall not pull out of the neon electrode boot.6 Tests for Systems for Dry, Damp and Wet Locations6.1 As received dielectric voltage withstand test for systems with straight through style neonelectrode boots6.1.1 This test is to be performed on systems with straight through style neon ele

44、ctrode boots.6.1.2 A length of GTO cable with integral sleeve is to be inserted through a sample of a neon electrodeboot. The end of the GTO cable with integral sleeve is to have 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) of the insulationstripped off the conductor. The stripped conductor is to be bent normal to the axis

45、of the cable and thestripped end of the cable pulled back into the neon electrode boot to its intended position.6.1.3 A quantity of steel shot is to be added into the open end of the neon electrode boot to fill the areawhere the splice would normally be located.6.1.4 A length of neon tubing is to be

46、 inserted into the opening in the neon electrode boot and pressedinto the boot until it comes in contact with the steel shot. The diameter of the neon tubing shall match theneon electrode boot.OCTOBER 22, 2002SUBJECT 879B86.1.5 The assembly is to be placed in steel shot to such a depth that the area

47、 around the outside of theneon electrode boot where the splice connection would normally be located is submerged in the steelshot.6.1.6 A test potential of 17,000 Vac at 60 Hz is to be applied between the steel shot surrounding theassembly and the steel shot within the assembly through the free end

48、of the GTO cable with integralsleeve. There shall be no evidence of dielectric voltage breakdown.6.2 As received dielectric voltage withstand test for systems with double back style neonelectrode boots6.2.1 A quantity of steel shot is to be added into the open end of the neon electrode boot to fill

49、the areawhere the splice would normally be located to a depth of 6.35 mm (0.25 inch).6.2.2 The end of the GTO cable with integral sleeve is to have 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) of the insulationstripped off the conductor. The stripped conductor is to be bent normal to the axis of the cable and thestripped end of the cable pushed into the cable opening of the neon electrode boot until the lead comesin contact with, and lays against, the steel shot.6.2.3 A length
