16、SME B18.24.4. Materials and Manufacture4.1 The screws shall be fabricated from steel made to finegrain practice and shall have an austenitic grain size of 5 orfiner. In the event of controversy over grain size, referee testson finished screws conducted in accordance with Test MethodsE112 shall preva
17、il.4.2 All socket set screws with diameters through M3.5 andany diameter with a length that achieves less than seven threadpitches may be rolled, cut, or ground. Set screws of M4 andlarger diameter and with more than seven thread pitches inlength shall have rolled threads.4.3 High strength screws sh
18、all be heat treated by quenchingin oil from above the transformation temperature and thentempered by reheating to at least 425C to within the hardnessrange specified in Table 1.4.3.1 The minimum tempering temperature may be verifiedby submitting screws to 415C for 30 min at temperature. Themean cros
19、s section hardness of three readings on the screwbefore and after retempering shall not differ by more than 20DPH.4.4 Re-heat-treatment of screws for the purpose of carbonrestoration is not permitted except for set screws.4.5 Standard FinishesUnless otherwise specified, thescrews shall be furnished
20、with one of the following “standardsurfaces as manufactured,” at the option of the manufacturer;(1) bright uncoated, (2) thermal black oxide, or (3) chemicalblack oxide. Hydrogen embrittlement tests shall not be re-quired for screws furnished in these conditions.4.6 Protective Coatings:4.6.1 When a
21、protective finish other than as specified in 4.5is required, it shall be specified on the purchase order with theapplicable finish specification.4.6.2 When protective or decorative coatings are applied tothe screws, precautions specified by the coating requirementsto minimize internal hydrogen embri
22、ttlement shall be exer-cised. When specified in the purchase order, testing shall beconducted in accordance with Test Methods F606M or F1940.5. Chemical Composition5.1 The screws shall be alloy steel conforming to thechemical composition specified in Table 2 and the require-ments of Specification F2
23、282. See Supplementary Require-ment S1 when additional alloy steel grades are required.5.2 One or more of the following alloying elements:chromium, nickel, molybdenum, or vanadium shall be presentin the steel in sufficient quantity to ensure the specified strengthproperties are met after oil quenchi
24、ng and tempering. As aguide for selecting material, an alloy steel should be capable ofmeeting the specified mechanical requirements if the “as oilquenched” core hardness one diameter from the point is equalto or exceeds 25 HRC + (55 carbon content).5.3 When product analyses are made by the purchase
25、r fromfinished screws representing each lot, the chemical composi-tion shall conform to the requirements for product analysis inTable 2.5.4 Steel to which bismuth, selenium, tellurium, or lead hasbeen intentionally added shall not be permitted for cold headedproducts.5.5 Chemical analyses shall be p
26、erformed in accordancewith Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A751.6. Mechanical Properties6.1 Screws shall meet the mechanical requirements in Table1 and Table 3.6.2 The screws that are tested for wedge tensile strengthshall utilize a wedge of the angle specified in Table 4 under thehead.To m
27、eet the requirements of the wedge test, there must bea tensile failure in the body or thread section. For the purposeof this test, failure means separation into two pieces. Screwsthreaded to the head shall pass the requirements for this test ifthe fracture that caused failure originated in the threa
28、d area,even though it may have propagated into the fillet area or thehead before separation.6.3 The hardness limits shall be met anywhere on the crosssection through the threads, one diameter from the screw pointas determined using Test Methods F606M.7. Dimensions7.1 Unless otherwise specified, the
29、product shall conform tothe requirements of the dimensional specification detailed inthe purchase order.8. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance8.1 There shall be no evidence of carburization or grossdecarburization on the surfaces of the heat-treated screws whenmeasured in accordance with F2328M (Cla

In the event that hardness reductions occur intest specimens due to coating curing times and temperatures,testing shall be conducted alternatively in accordance with TestMethod F1624.10. Test Methods10.1 Conduct tests for proof load, wedge tensile, andultimate tensile strength in accord
34、ance with Test MethodsF606M.10.2 Decarburization and carburization tests shall be con-ducted in accordance with Test Method F2328M.10.3 Surface discontinuities including thread lap inspectionshall be conducted in accordance with Standard F788/F788M.11. Inspection11.1 If the additional tests describe
35、d in 11.2 are required bythe purchaser, it shall be specified in the inquiry, order, orcontract.11.2 The inspector representing the purchaser, upon reason-able notice, shall have free entry to all parts of the manufac-turers works that concern the manufacture of the materialordered. The manufacturer
36、 shall afford the inspector all rea-sonable facilities to satisfy him that the material is beingfurnished in accordance with this specification. All tests andinspection required by the specification that are requested bythe purchasers representative shall be made before shipment,and shall be so cond
37、ucted as not to interfere unnecessarily withthe operation of the works.12. Product Marking12.1 All screws with nominal diameters of 5 mm and largershall be permanently marked to identify the property class,11.9 and the manufacturers or private label distributorsidentification symbol.12.2 Property cl
38、ass and manufacturers or private labeldistributors identification shall be separate and distinct. Marksshall preferably be in different locations and, when on the samelevel, shall be separated by a distinctive mark such as a forwardor backward slash, colon, dash, dot, or space.13.
