、AE TC 5.11.The purpose of this standard is to provide a uniformmethod for testing in a laboratory environment. Although themethod of test originated in ARI Standard 640, PerformanceRating Industrial and Commercial Humidifiers, the committeehas developed this separate method of test to be used inde-p

PURPOSEThis standard method of test establishes a uniform method oflaboratory

、 testing for rating commercial and industrial iso-thermal humidifiers.2. SCOPE2.1 The scope of this standard covers a method of test for thehumidification rate of commercial and industrial isothermalhumidifiers.2.2 This method of test describes the test apparatus, conductof the test, and information

、 to be recorded.2.3 Information resulting from the application of this methodof test is intended for use by manufacturers, specifiers, install-ers, and users of commercial and industrial humidifiers.3. DEFINITIONScommercial and industrial humidifier: a device designed toadd moisture to air for comme

、rcial and industrial applications.direct injection steam humidifiers: a type of humidifier, intended for duct and area applications, in which dry satu-rated steam is dispersed directly into the air.heated tank humidifiers: a type of humidifier that convertstank water to steam using electricity, gas,

、steam, or hot fluid. The steam is dispersed into a duct system through dispersionmanifolds. If the humidifier is a free-standing unit, the steamis dispersed directly into the air space through a fan.humidification rate: a measure of the ability of a humidifierto add moisture to its surrounding atmosp

The International System of Units (leSysteme International dUnites)1is employed in this standard.Values shall be based on

、 the National Institute of Standardsand Technology (NIST) values which, in turn, are based onthe fundamental values of the International Bureau ofWeights and Measures. Inch-pound units appear in parenthe-ses (I-P) after SI units.4.2 Basic Units. The unit of length is either the metre (foot)designate

、d “m” (“ft”) or the millimeter (inch), designated“mm” (“in.”). The unit of mass is the kilogram (pound mass),designated “kg” (“lbm”). The unit of time is the minute, des-ignated “min,” or the second, designated “s.” The unit oftemperature is the degree Celsius (Fahrenheit), designated“C” (“F”).4.2.1

、 Flow Rate, Humidification Rate, and Velocity. Theunits for the flow rate for air are litres per second (cubic feetper minute), designated “L/s” (“cfm”). The unit for the flowrate for water is kilograms per hour (pounds mass per hour),designated “kg/h” (“lbm/h”). The unit for velocity is metresper s

、econd (feet per minute), designated “m/s” (“fpm”).4.2.2 Pressure. The unit of pressure is the Pascal or kilo-pascal (pounds per square inch, inch water gage, or the inchmercury column), designated “Pa” or “kPa” (“psi,” “in. wc”or “in. Hg”). The inch mercury column shall be based on aone-inch column

、of mercury at 0C (32F), under standardgravity (in vacuo).4.2.3 Power and Energy. In this standard, the unit of electri-cal voltage is the volt, designated as “V.” The unit of electricalpower is the kilowatt, designated “kW.” The unit of electricalenergy is the kilowatt-hour, designated “kWh.” The un

、it forthermal energy is the kilojoule (British thermal unit), designate“kJ” (“Btu”). The unit for steam mass flow is kilograms perhour (pounds per hour), designated as “kg/h” (“lb/h”).5. INSTRUMENTATIONS ANDMETHODS OF MEASUREMENT5.1 Calibration. Except where noted, instruments shall becalibrated ann

Calibration shall be certified traceable to the NIST orother national physical measures recognized as equivalent toNIST.5.2 Mass Flow Instruments5.2.1 Direct Steam Humidifier Test Stand. Steam massflow shall be determined by measuring the pressure d

The accuracy of the measuring

、t Steam Humidifier Test Stand. The scaleand weigh tank shall have a pressurized water supply tank tothe humidifier, and a waste water tank, as shown in Figure 2.The scale shall have an accuracy of 0.005 kg (0.01 lbm).5.3 Air Temperature. Both wet- and dry-bulb air tempera-tures shall be measured in

、accordance with ANSI/ASHRAEStandard 41.1, Standard Method for Temperature Measure-ment.2A measurement accuracy of 0.5C (1.0F) or bettershall be obtained. The smallest scale division of the instru-ment shall be no greater than 0.2C (0.5F).5.4 Water or Fluid Temperature. Water and fluid tempera-ture s

、hall be measured using a submerged well, an insulatedwrap of the supply line, or any other method with a demon-strated accuracy of 0.5C (1.0F) or better.5.5 Relative Humidity. Relative humidity shall be calcu-lated from the dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature, and barometric pressure or read d

、irectly from a humiditymeasuring device that has a demonstrated accuracy of 1%.5.6 Chronometer. A timepiece that displays time in secondsand keeps time accurate to within 2 minutes per day shall beused for all time measurements. Calibration is not necessary.5.7 Water-Pressure-Indicating Instruments.

、 Water pres-sure shall be measured with oil-filled gages, electronic trans-ducers, or other instruments that provide a maximum error of1% of the maximum observed reading or 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi),whichever is larger. Since the pressures measured in this stan-dard are not expected to be steady, the pressu

、re reading indi-cated on any instrument will fluctuate with time. In order toobtain a true reading, either the instrument shall be damped orthe readings shall be averaged in a suitable manner. Multi-point or continuous record averaging can be accomplishedwith instruments and analyzers designed for t

、his purpose.5.8 Combustion Gas Mass Flow. Combustion gas massflow shall be measured using any measurement device withan accuracy of 2.0% of the observed reading.5.9 Electrical Voltage. Voltage shall be measured using avolt meter connected to the humidifier over the duration ofthe test. Volt meters s

、hall have an accuracy of 1.0% of theobserved reading.5.10 Power Measurement. Power shall be measured using awattmeter connected to the humidifier over the duration of thetest. Wattmeters shall have an accuracy of 1.0% of theobserved reading.5.11 Electrical Energy Measurement. Energy shall be mea-sur

、ed using a watt-hour meter connected to the humidifierover the duration of the test. Watt-hour meters shall have anaccuracy of 1.0% of the observed reading.5.12 Atmospheric Pressure. The atmospheric pressure shallbe measured with a mercury column barometer or other instru-ment with a demonstrated ac

、curacy of 200 Pa (0.06 in. Hg)and with scale divisions no larger than 50 Pa (0.015 in. Hg).Test shall be conducted below 1500 m (5000 ft) elevation.5.13 Water Conductivity Measurements. Water conductiv-ity shall be measured using a conductivity meter having anaccuracy 0.5 S of observed reading.5.14

、Airflow. Room airflow shall be measured within fivefeet of the humidifier using an instrument that has a demon-strated accuracy of 0.0125 m/s (2.5 fpm).6. EQUIPMENT AND SETUP6.1 Air Treatment Facilities. The test facility shall be pro-vided with air treating equipment to maintain the prescribedconditions of temperature, humidity, and pressure within thetest area.6.2 Temperature Measuring. Air temperature measure-ments and fluid temperature measurements shall be made inaccordance with the applicable provisions of ANSI/ASHRAEStandard 41.1,2St
