The steel

General Requirements7.1 The sizes and constructions for barbed wire furnishedunder this specification shall be in accordance with therequirements o
、f Table 1 for the Design Number specified in theorder, within the tolerances stated in Section 8.7.2 The barbs shall be sharp, well-formed, and tightlywrapped. The barb length, measured from the center of the twostrand wires, shall be38 in. 9.5 mm minimum.7.3 The strand wires shall be twisted with a
、 uniform lengthof lay. Type Z and Type ZAbarbed wire shall have the twistingconsistently in one direction (left or right) or alternatingbetween the left and right directions. Type A barbed wire shallhave the twisting consistently in either the left or rightdirection, with alternating of the twisting
、 prohibited.7.4 Splicing of individual wires by means of a wrap joint oran electric butt weld is permitted. Not more than three splicesor joints shall exist in any spool of barbed wire. Such splices orjoints shall be made in a workmanlike manner.7.5 The barbed wire, for the various types, shall be p
、ack-aged on spools in lengths as follows:7.5.1 Type A80 rods (1320 ft) 402 m or 1000 ft 305 m.7.6 Types Z and ZA80 rods (1320 ft) 402 m or 80 rodsplus additional increments of 10 rods (165 ft) 50 m.7.7 Breaking StrengthThe breaking strength of thestranded barbed wire, for all types, shall be not les
、s than 950lbf 4230 N. This breaking strength reflects that of both strandwires tested together as one unit.8. Permissible Variations in Dimensions8.1 DiameterThe permissible variation from the nominaldiameter of the wire, for both line wires and barbs, for alltypes, shall be 60.005 in. 0.13 mm8.1.1
、Due to the mechanics of manufacture when formingthe barbs, a certain amount of out-of-roundness is expected. The size and condition precludes barbs from being subjected todiameter checks.8.2 Barb SpacingThe nominal spacing of the barbs shallbe as noted in Table 1. The individual barb spacing shall be
、measured from the edge of one barb at the strand to thecorresponding edge of the adjacent barb. Cumulative spacing isestablished by counting the total number of barbs in a 25-ft7.6-m length of barbed wire. Barbs are subject to relocationduring fabrication and handling, potentially leading to rejec-t
、ions with rigid interpretation of the spacing requirement. Therefore, barb spacing shall be considered acceptable underthe following conditions:8.2.1 The sample has 93.5 % of the individual barb spacingsconforming to the specified spacing 634 in. 19 mm, and8.2.2 A sample length of 25 ft 7.6 m of barb
、ed wirecontains:8.2.2.1 A minimum of 86 barbs for 3-in. 76-mm spacing,8.2.2.2 Aminimum of 69 barbs for 4-in. 102-mm spacing,or8.2.2.3 Aminimum of 55 barbs for 5-in. 127-mm spacing.9. Sampling and Testing9.1 SamplingFor the purpose of tests, select one spool atrandom from every 50 spools or fraction
、thereof in a lot, or atotal of seven samples, whichever is less. A lot shall consist ofall spools of a single construction (Design Number) of barbedwire offered for delivery at the same time.9.2 Test Specimens for Physical TestsCut a 4-ft 1.2-mlength of barbed wire from the end of each spool for tes
、tsprescribed in Sections 6 and 7. Determine the breaking strengthvalue by testing the twisted strand as composite. Test eachstrand wire individually for weight of coating.9.3 Testing for Weight of CoatingCoating weight forTypes Z and ZA shall be determined in accordance with TestMethod A 90/A 90M. C
、oating weight for Type A shall bedetermined in accordance with Test Method A 428/A 428M.Perform testing either before or after fabrication for the strandwires and for Type A steel barbs. Perform testing prior tofabrication forType Z and ZAbarbs, and certify the test results.9.4 Pretesting of WireIns
、tead of testing wire for breakingstrength and weight of coating from the completed barbed wirein accordance with 9.2, the manufacturer, at his election, shallestablish compliance with the requirements in Sections 6 and 7by tests made on wire prior to fabrication. If the manufacturermakes this electi
、on, the purchaser still has the right to test wirefrom the completed barbed wire for compliance. It is recog-nized that during fabrication the barb is mechanically deformedand scraped, and some differences are likely in coating weightresults on barbs tested before and after fabrication.9.5 Inspectio
、n for General WorkmanshipFor the purposeof inspection, a maximum of two spools from the lot, asdescribed in 9.1, shall be subjected to observations for barblength and spacing, overall length, and workmanship.9.5.1 Instead of inspecting for length by unrolling fullspools, the purchaser and manufactur
、er have the option ofagreeing on a weight per spool related to wire size orA121073measuring tools employed during manufacturing. The pur-chaser still reserves the right to confirm the length by actualmeasurement.9.5.2 Inspection for barb spacing is normally performed onthe outer 25-ft 7.6-m length of a spool, which permitsrepacki
