、Designation: A724/A724M 09Standard Specification forPressure Vessel Plates, Carbon-Manganese-Silicon Steel,Quenched and Tempered, for Welded Pressure Vessels1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A724/A724M; the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original
、 adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This specification2covers three grades of carbon-manganese-silicon
、 steel, designated GradesA, B, and C. GradeC may be produced with a boron addition. The plates arequenched and tempered and are intended for welded-layeredpressure vessels.1.2 The maximum thickness of plates supplied under thisspecification is limited only by the capability of the chemicalcompositio
、n to meet the specified mechanical requirements. However, current practice normally limits the maximum thick-ness to78 in. 22 mm for GradesAand B, and to 2 in. 50 mmfor Grade C.1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, theS
、I units are shown in brackets. The values stated in eachsystem are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system mustbe used independently of the other. Combining values from thetwo systems may result in nonconformance with the specifi-cation.2. Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:3A20/A20M Speci

Heat Treatment5.1 All plates shall be quenched from a temperature in therange from 1600 to 1700F 870 to 925C. Grades A and
、 Bshall then be tempered at not less than 1100F 595C, andGrade C shall then be tempered at not less than 1150F620C. The tempering soaking time shall be not less than12h.6. Chemical Composition6.1 The steel shall conform to the requirements as tochemical composition prescribed in Table 1.7. Mechanica
、l Properties7.1 Tension Test Requirements:7.1.1 The material as represented by the tension test speci-mens shall conform to the requirements given in Table 2.7.1.2 For nominal plate thicknesses of34 in. 20 mm andunder, the 112-in. 40-mm wide rectangular specimen may beused for the tension test, and
、the elongation may be determinedin a 2-in. 50-mm gage length that includes the fracture andshows the greatest elongation.8.
