、Designation: B 415 98 (Reapproved 2007)Standard Specification forHard-Drawn Aluminum-Clad Steel Wire1This standard is issued under the fixed designation B 415; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revisi

、on. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers four conductivities o

、f bare,hard-drawn, round, aluminum-clad steel wire for general usefor electrical purposes in sizes 0.2043 to 0.0808 in. incl (4 to 12AWG) (Note 1). This specification does not apply to wires usedas reinforcement in ACSR conductors. (See SpecificationB 502.)NOTE 1Wire ordered to this specification is

、 not intended for redraw-ing. If wire is desired for this purpose, the manufacturer shall beconsulted.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard. Ordering Information3.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:3.1.1 Quantity and conductivity of each size,3.1.2 Wire size: diameter in inches (see 7.1 and Table 1),3.1.3 Method of measuring elongation if other than 5.3(optional),3.1.4 Special pac

、kage marking if required (Section 16), and3.1.5 Package size (see 17.1), and3.1.6 Place of inspection if other than place of manufacture(Section 14).4. Material4.1 The wire shall be composed of a steel core with asubstantially uniform and continuous aluminum covering thor-oughly bonded to it. The dr

、awn wire shall have the propertiesand characteristics prescribed in this specification.5. Tensile Properties5.1 The wire shall conform to the tensile requirementsprescribed in Table 1 (Note 2). In computing tensile strength, the actual diameter of the finished wire shall be used.NOTE 2The approximate

、 properties of standard AWG sizes of hard-drawn aluminum-clad steel wire are shown in Table 2 for the informationof the user of this specification.5.2 Wire of a nominal diameter that exceeds a size listed inTable 1 shall conform to the tensile requirements of the nextlarger diameter.5.3 Elongation s

、hall be determined by an extensometersuitable for measuring elongation in 10 in. (250 mm) andequipped with a vernier reading to 0.01 in. (0.25 mm). It shallbe attached to the test specimen at a tensile load of 10 % of therated strength. The elongation shall be observed while applyinga tension load t

、o the specimen. The reading at the time offracture shall be taken as the elongation of the specimen. Theelongation thus determined shall be not less than 1.5 % in 10in. Tests shall be disregarded in which the extensometerreading is less than 1.5 % and in which the fracture does notoccur between the

、extensometer attachments and at least 1 in.(25.0 mm) from the two attachments. In this case anothersample from the same reel or coil shall be tested.5.4 When agreed upon by the manufacturer and the pur-chaser, the elongation may be determined by measurementsmade between the jaws of the testing machi

、ne. The zero lengthshall be the distance between the jaws when a load equal to10 % of the specified tensile strength shall have been appliedand the final length shall be the distance between the jaws atthe time of rupture. The zero length shall be as near 60 in. (1.52m) as practicable. The elongatio

、n thus determined shall be notless than 1.4 %. Tests in which the elongation is less than 1.4 %1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee B01 onElectrical Conductors and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee B01.06 onComposite Conductors.Current edition approved Oct. 1, 2

Resistance6.1 The electrical resistance of the wire (Note 2 and Note 3)shall be determined by resistance measurements and maximumresistance shall be based on the nominal diameter of the wireand the resistivity value of:51.01 Vcmil/ft at 20C for 20.3 % Conductivit

、ade at tempera-tures other than 20C, corrections shall be based on thecorresponding temperature coefficient of resistance shown inTable 2.6.3 The electrical resistivity of the material shall be deter-mined in accordance with Test Method B 193.7. Dimensions and Permissible Variations7.1 The size shal

(0.0025mm), that is, in tenths of mils.7.2 Within the range of diameters included in Table 3, thewire shall not vary from the specified diameter by more thanthe amounts shown in this table. In computing perm

In thecase of reels, the center and one end may not be accessible andthe prescribed diameter measure

、ment shall be taken along thelength of the accessible material. If any of the selected coils orreels fail to conform to the requirements for diameter asprescribed in 7.2, all coils or reels shall be measured in themanner specified.8. Thickness of Aluminum8.1 The aluminum thickness at any point shall

、 be not lessthan stated in Table 4. Measurements shall be read to theclosest 0.001 in. (0.025 mm). In determining the required ormeasured thickness, 0.0005 in. (0.013 mm) or less shall bedropped. For greater than 0.0005 in., the next larger 0.001 in.shall be used. Measurements shall be made by (a) u

、singsuitable electrical indicating instruments operating on thepermeameter principle, or (b) direct measurement. For refereepurposes, direct measurement shall be used to determinealuminum thickness on specimens taken from the ends of thecoils.9. Twist Test9.1 The wire shall withstand without fractur
