、Designation: C 397 00 (Reapproved 2005)Standard Practice forUse of Chemically Setting Chemical-Resistant Silicate andSilica Mortars1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C 397; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of re

、vision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This practice provides information for the proper stor-age, mixing, and use of chemically setting

、 silicate and silicamortars for bonding chemical-resistant brick or tile in order toobtain the optimum chemical resistance and physical strengthof the mortar.1.2 This practice does not apply to the air-setting type ofsilicate and silica chemical-resistant mortars.1.3 Chemical-resistant brick or tile

、 conforming to Specifi-cations C 279, C 410, or C 980 are considered satisfactory foruse with these mortars.NOTE 1For specifications for mortars covered by this practice, seeSpecification C 466.1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard. The values given in parenthes

Installation Conditions5.1 Silicate and silica mortars shall be applied when thepowder, binder or water, brick or tile, substrate and ambient airtemperatures are all between 50F (10C) and 90F (32C). Fortemperatures outside this range, consult

、been wetted. Add the remainder of the powder to the mix andcontinue mixing to a proper mortar consistency.6.3 Mix only as much mortar as can be used during itsworking time. Since the working time depends on the tempera-ture, the batch size shall be determined on the job site if dataare not available

、 from the manufacturer.6.4 Mortar that has begun to set shall not be altered byadding binder or water. Remove mortar that has begun to setfrom the mortar pan, and discard it before preparing freshbatches.6.5 No additives, such as portland cement shall be added tothe mortar. Silica sand or other mate

、rials shall not be addedunless recommended by the manufacturer, and then only in aquantity and quality specified by the manufacturer.6.6 Apply the mortar to the brick or tile in a mannerconsistent with good workmanship. Butter the surface to fullycover, leaving a slight mound of mortar in the center
