The active discipline of heightening ones perception of

、 what is enduring in nature would have been his idea of the high. What he saved from the low was time and effort he could spend on the high. Thoreau certainly disapproved of starvation, but he would put into feeding himself only as much effort as would keep him functioning for more important efforts

、. Effort is the gist of it. There is no happiness except as we take on life-engaging difficulties. Short of the impossible, as Yeats put it, the satisfaction we get from a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties. Robert Frost was thinking in something like the same terms when he spok

、e of “the pleasure of taking pains“. The mortal flaw in the advertised version of happiness is in the fact that it purports to be effortless. We demand difficulty even in our games. We demand it because without difficulty there can be no game. A game is a way of making something hard for the fun of

、it. The rules of the game are an arbitrary imposition of difficulty. When someone ruins the fun, he always does so by refusing to play by the rules. It is easier to win at chess if you are free, at your pleasure, to change the wholly arbitrary rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules. No di

、fficulty, no fun. 2 The word “winner“ and “loser“ have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose. To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a membe

、r of a society. Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a difference between being lovin

、g and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask. Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking and to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinions and dont pretend to have

、 all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say, but come to their own conclusions. Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them. Winners do not play “ helpless“, nor do they play the blaming game-Instead , the

、y assume responsibility for their own lives. 3 In his classic novel, The Pioneers, James Fenimore Cooper has his hero, a land developer, with his cousin on a tour of the city he is building. He describes the broad streets, rows of houses, a bustling metropolis. But his cousin looks around bewildered

、. All she sees is a forest. “ Where are the beauties and improvements which you were to show me?“ she asks. Hes astonished she cant see them. “Where! Why everywhere,“ he replies. For though they are not yet built on earth, he has built them in his mind, and they are as concrete to him as if they wer

、e already constructed and finished. Cooper was illustrating a distinctly American trait, future-mindedness: the ability to see the present from the vantage point of the future; the freedom to feel unencumbered by the past and more emotionally attached to things to come. As Albert Einstein once said,

、 “Life for the American is always becoming, never being. “ 4 But, as has been true in many other cases, when they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical. Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, goi

This led to some distressing moments for both our friends; they understood suddenly that instead of dwelling in heaven they were still upon earth, and had made themselves slaves to new laws and limitations. Instead of being freer an

、d happier than ever before, they had assumed new responsibilities; they had established a new household, and must fulfill in some way or another the obligations of it. They looked back with affection to their engagement; they had been longing to have each other to themselves , apart from the world,

、but it seemed they never felt so keenly that they were still units in modern society. SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.

、二段第一句 “Effort is the gist of it ”中代词 it指代上文中 the active discipline,翻译时要仔细理解上下文内容,否则表达会有偏差。 2第二段第二句 “There istake onlife -engaging difficulties ”中 take on的意思是 “呈现,具有,承担 ”, lifeengaging可译为 “全身心投入的 ”。 3第二段第三句 “Short of the impossible, choose out diffi culties ”中, short of在文中译为 “除了 以外 ”。

【试题解析】 1第二段第一句 “Winners do not dedicate their lives toand manipulating others ”超长,是理 解整篇文章的关键之处,也是原文中最难的地方。 dedicate their lives to表示 “把他们的生命致力于 ” 。 2 what they imagine they should be译为 “他们想象中自己应该成为的样子 ”,是concept的具体说明,翻译时可以不把 concept译出来。 3 put on a performance即 “演戏给别人看

4第二段第二句 “They are awarebeing loving and acting loving , acting knowledgeable ”在翻译时采用顺译法,使译文与原文在语气和结构上一致。 5第三段第一句中 do their own thinking可译为 “独立思考 ”。 6第三段第二句 “They can separate fa

pretend to have all the answers即 “假装知道所有问题的答案 ”或 “假装无所不知 ”。 7第三段第四句 “Although winnersdefined , demolished, bound, or awed by them ”中,几个动词 define, demolish, bind, awe可分别译为 “限制 ”、 “打垮 ”、 “束缚 ”、 “敬畏 ”。

7 the vantage point of the future可译为 “未来的有利角度、位置 ”。

The most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical译成中文时,需把被动态译为主动态,以避免翻译腔。

Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, going halves的正常语序为 Instead of having shared their original duties, and going halves as schoolboys would say。 4 cares of life had been doubled译成中文时,也需把被动态译为主动态,更符合中文表达习惯。 7 apart from the world相当于 away from the world,这里的 world是指 “二人以外的一切尘世的东西 ”。
