Dainty abandon, sometimes as if Nature laughing on a hillside in the sunshine; serious and firm monotonies, as of winds; a horn sounding through the tangle of the forest, and the dying echoes; soothing floating of waves, but presently rising in surg

The conceit came to me of a copious grove of singing birds, and in their midst a simple harmonic duo, two human souls, steadily asserting their own pensiveness, joyousness. 2 I find it

、 wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in o

、ur chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowed hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The fa

、rmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome, because he is employed. 3 Opera is expensive: that much is inevitable. But expensive things are not inevitably the province of the rich unless we abdicate societys power of choice. We can choose to make

、 opera, and other expensive forms of culture, accessible to those who cannot individually pay for it. The question is: why should we? Nobody denies the imperatives of food, shelter, defense, health and education. But even in a prehistoric cave, mankind stretched out a hand not just to eat, drink or

、fight, but also to draw. The impulse towards culture, the desire to express and explore the world through imagination and representation is fundamental. In Europe, this desire has found fulfillment in the masterpieces of our music, art, literature and theatre. These masterpieces are the touchstones

、for all our efforts; they are the touchstones for the possibilities to which human thought and imagination may aspire; they carry the most profound messages that can be sent from one human to another. 4 Ruth and her family were home again, and Martin, returned to Oakland, saw much of her. Having gai

、ned her degree, she was doing no more studying; and he, having worked all vitality out of his mind and body, was doing no writing. This gave them time for each other that they had never had before, and their intimacy ripened fast. At first, Martin had done nothing but rest. He had slept a great deal

、, and spent long hours musing and thinking and doing nothing. He was like one recovering from some terrible bout of hardship. The first signs of reawakening came when he discovered more than languid interest in the daily paper. Then he began to read again light novels, and poetry; and after several

His splendid body and health made new vitality, and he possessed all the resiliency and rebound of youth. 5 For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes incr

、easingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness. I am lonely only when I am overtire

、d, when I have worked too long without a break, when for the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out. Then

、 for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and, perhaps, by looking again at each one as though it were a person. It takes a while, as I watch the surf blowing up in fountains, but the moment comes w

、hen the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood. SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.

2、第 1句 sink into and soothe and fill并列作谓语。 its impossibility of statement用 “妙不可言 ”译,恰如其分。 4、第 4句的 to watch the violinists drawing their bows so masterly在深层语义上表示原因,故将其前置译出。 every motion a

I never foundthat was so as

、im be where he will是假设条件句,如 Let it be ever so humble homeis home

、意为 a subject that one knows a lot about, expensive things are not inevitably theprovince of the rich译为 “高贵的东西并不一定只属于富人 ”,其中名词 province转译成动词 “属于 ”。 3、 第 2句的 make accessible to sb 可理解为 make it easy for sb to understand andenjoy ,故可将整句译为 “我们可以让歌剧和其他高贵的文化形式也能为那些不具备个人支付能力的人所享受 ”。

Having , was doing ; having , was doing

、;马丁也不再 ” ;用汉语成语 “心力交瘁 ”译having workedall vitality out of his mind and body,贴切生动。

full to the brim with 因此将 full to the brim with experience译作 “千头万绪 ”是恰当的。
