、Designation: D1455 17Standard Test Method for60 Specular Gloss of Emulsion Floor Polish1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1455; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number

、in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the 60specular gloss of films of emulsion floor polish after applica-tion to a substrate.NOTE 1Sp

、ecular gloss is one of several related appearance attributesthat produce the sensation of glossiness. For this reason, specular glossmeasurements may not always correlate well with visual rankings ofglossiness.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associate

、d with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.3 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles o

Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 specular glossthe ratio of reflected to incident light, times 1000, for specified apertures of illumination and recep-tion when the axis of

、 reception coincides with the mirror imageof the axis of illumination.4. Significance and Use4.1 This test method may be used to evaluate the differencein gloss of dried films of emulsion floor polishes when the lightreflected at a 60 angle is measured. Extremely high- orlow-gloss polishes may not b

、e differentiated at a 60 angle.A20 angle measured in accordance with Test Method D523may give better definition of gloss.5. Apparatus5.1 GlossmeterThe instrument and the reference stan-dards shall conform to the requirements prescribed in TestMethod D523, using an angle of reflection of 60.5.2 Floor

、 Polish ApplicatorThe equipment for applicationof the floor polish shall conform to the requirements prescribedin Test Methods D1436.6. Substrates6.1 Two standard substrates are commonly used; however, commercial types may be used to test specific applications.Better agreement of results can be expec

、ted when black glassis used as the substrate, except for those cases where thesample being tested produces a hazy film. Where a hazy film isproduced, black glass should not be employed as the substrate. The standard types are as follows:6.1.1 Black Glass,3,4having a highly polished plane surfacewith

、a refractive index of 1.567.6.1.2 Offcial Vinyl Composition Tile,5new and unused.7. Procedure7.1 Apply the floor polish to the substrate in accordancewith the procedures described in Test Methods D1436. MethodA, using the automatic dip coater, can be expected to givebetter agreement of results. For

、comparison of results, the samemethod of application must be used.7.2 Determine the specular gloss at 60 in accordance withTest Method D523.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D21 on Polishesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D21.04 on Performance Tests.Current

Readings obtained on differentinstruments should be reproducible to within 5 % of themagnitude of the readings.9.2 Results obtained may be uncertain due to the cumulativeeffect of several
