Scope1.1 This specification covers crushed stone, crushedhydraulic-cement concrete, crushed blast-furnace slag, crushedgravel, crushed

3、 expanded shale, crushed expanded clay, andcrushed expanded slate suitable for use in bituminous pavingmixtures, as described in Specifications D3515 or D4215.NOTE 1Other slags having demonstrated a satisfactory service recordmay be used.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsar

4、e to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. United States15. Physical Requirements5.1 GeneralThe coarse aggregate shall consist of hard,strong, durable pieces, fre

15、e of coherent coatings and conform-ing to the requirements of this specification.5.2 Grading:5.2.1 The coarse aggregate grading shall conform to therequirements of Classification D448 for the size numberdesignated, or to another grading as stated in the order (seeNote 2).NOTE 2The coarse aggregate g

16、rading to be furnished is dependentupon the desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether thegrading to be used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending.Other coarse aggregate gradings may be used provided that the combinedaggregate and filler, when used, will produce a paving mi

17、xture thatprovides the desired characteristics.5.2.2 The size to be used is dependent upon the desiredcomposition of the paving mixture, and the required size orsizes either before or after blending as specified.5.3 Density:5.3.1 SlagAir-cooled blast-furnace-slag coarse aggregate,when tested in size

18、 No. 57 or No. 8, shall have a minimumdensity of 1120 kg/m370 lb/ft3 as determined in accordancewith Test Method C29/C29M, rodding procedure.5.3.2 Expanded Shale, Expanded Clay, Expanded SlateThe coarse aggregate, when tested in size No. 57 or No. 8, shallhave a minimum density of 500 kg/m331 lb/ft3

19、 as determinedin accordance with Test Method C29/C29M, shoveling proce-dure.5.4 Fractured Particles in Coarse AggregateOrders formaterials under this specification shall state the appropriaterequirements for fractured particles.5.4.1 Conventional MixturesNot less than 40 %, by mass,of the aggregate

20、particles retained on the 4.75-mm No. 4sieve shall have at least one fractured face (see Notes 3 and 4).5.4.2 Open Graded Friction Course MixturesOf the ag-gregate particles retained on the 4.75-mm No. 4 sieve, notless than 90 %, by mass, shall have one or more fractured facesand 75 %, by mass, two

21、or more fractured faces.NOTE 3Attention is called to the distinction between conventional(dense mixtures or open mixtures) and open-graded friction coursemixtures in Specification D3515.NOTE 4Some sources of aggregate contain angular particles that willperform similarly to a mechanically fractured p

22、article. Where laboratorytests or service records indicate this to be true, such angular particles maybe considered as fractured.5.5 Polishing CharacteristicsThe coarse aggregates, orthe coarsest fraction of the aggregate for use in surface coursemixtures, shall be of a type known to possess adequat

23、eresistance to the polishing action of the anticipated traffic. (seeNote 5)NOTE 5No standardASTM method has been recognized to be capableof defining adequate resistance to the polishing action of specific trafficconditions. Test Method D3319 has been found useful in evaluating therelative polish res

24、istance between samples of different aggregates ormixtures containing different aggregates.5.6 SoundnessThe coarse aggregate, when subjected tofive cycles of the soundness test, shall have a weighted loss notgreater than 12 % when sodium sulfate is used or 18 % whenmagnesium sulfate is used. (see No

25、te 6). If the salt is notdesignated by the purchaser, the aggregate will be acceptable ifit meets the indicated limit for the salt used.5.7 DegradationThe aggregate (with the exception ofcrushed blast-furnace slag) when subjected to testing in accor-dance with Test Method C131 shall have a loss not

26、greater than40 % for surface courses or 50 % for base courses (see Note 6).NOTE 6Coarse aggregate (other than crushed hydraulic-cement con-crete) failing to meet the requirements of 5.6 or 5.7, may be considered foruse provided that (a) similar aggregates from the same source or geologicformation ha

27、ve been shown by experience to result in satisfactorypavements and (b) the results of other tests suggest that the desiredperformance can be obtained. Aggregate from a new source (includingcrushed hydraulic-cement concrete) that fails the requirements of 5.6 or5.7 and for which no experience exists,

28、 may be considered provided theresults of the other tests suggest that the desired performance can beobtained. Crushed hydraulic-cement concrete may chemically react withNa2SO4or MgSO4, giving higher results which may not reflect theaggregates freeze-thaw properties. Additional tests may be required

29、.6.
