1、Designation: D 4242 07Standard Test Method forInclined Plate Flow for Thermosetting Coating Powders1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 4242; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revisi

2、on. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This test method specifies a method for determining theflow characteristics of a fused thermosetting coating powderdown a plane

3、 inclined at a set angle to the horizontal. The testgives an indication of the degree of melt flow that may occurduring the curing of the coating powder. This characteristiccontributes to the coherence of the coating, to its surfaceappearance and to the degree of coverage over sharp edges (seeTest M

4、ethod D 2967), however, it should not be used as thesole factor for judgment. The test acts as a useful method forchecking for batch to batch variation in the behavior of a givencoating powder. Correlation between the results from coatingpowders of differing composition is not to be expected. Thisme

5、thod is unlikely to yield meaningful results with coatingpowders which have gel times of less than one minute at thetest temperature (see Test Method D 4217). Oven drafts, angleof inclination and pellet variations significantly affect resultsmaking inter-lab reproducibility somewhat difficult to cor

Summary of Test Method4.1 The thermosetting coating powder is pressed into apellet of standard size which is allowed to melt and flow downa heated inclined plate. The extent of flow is measured.5. Significance and Use5.1 This test method is useful

As an alternative, metal plates may be used. However, these will need to be closely defined with respect to theircomposit

The details of the glassor metal plates shall be included in the test report.6.3 Plate assembly, of suitable metal and design that fitsinside the oven. The assembly shall be capable of carrying oneor mor

Alternatively a fixedplate holder, of suitable metal and design, capable of holdingone or more of the plates at 65 6 1 to the horizontal may beused.

20、 If otherwise agreed to, test angles other than 65 may beused and thus reported.6.4 Balance, capable of measuring to 610 mg.6.5 Steel pellet-molding press, together with a knockout rod, capable of making pellets of 12.5 6 0.05 mm (0.5 6 0.002 in.)in diameter and 6.5 6 0.2 mm (0.25 6 0.008 in.) thick.

In the absenceof this information, a temperature shall

Place the plate assem-bly and plate(s) into the oven set at the test temperature andallow the holder to attain the test temperature. Alt

After a further 15 s sinceclosing the oven door, operate the plate assembly to bring theplate(s) to 65 6 1 to the horizontal. Allow the plate(s) toremain in this position for 15 min. At the end

28、of this periodremove the plate(s) from the oven and allow to cool to roomtemperature in a horizontal position.8.6 Using the steel rule, measure the total length of theflowed pellet in millimeters.
