Scope*1.1 This practice covers procedures for safely sampling andhandling 4,48-isopropylidinediphenol, commercially known asbisphe

3、nol A (BPA), in various solid forms, and as a liquid atelevated temperatures in a manner which represents andpreserves product quality.1.2 Any person sampling or handling this product shouldhave consulted a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) forspecific first aid instructions and information on the p

4、roperequipment to have available for use in the event of personalcontact or exposure.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.

Significance and Use3.1 This practice is issued to provide information useful inestablishing samp

7、ling and handling procedures. It is expectedthat this information will only be utilized in conjunction withan existing health and safety program and consultation with anappropriate MSDS. The information provided herein cannot beused as a substitute for expert safety and medical advice asprovided in

8、an appropriate MSDS, but rather as a supplementto such advice.4. Description of Product (See Table 1)4.1 Bisphenol A (BPA) is not classified as a hazardouschemical by the Department of Transportation, and is, thereforenot subject to DOT regulations governing the transportation ofhazardous articles.

9、Bisphenol A is normally transported inseveral types of containers including cloth and paper bags, bulktrucks, and covered hopper cars. (See Table 1.)4.2 While bisphenol A (BPA) is dangerous when handledimproperly, particularly at elevated temperatures, its unloadingneed not be hazardous provided the

10、 hazards are recognized andhandling instructions are rigidly observed as detailed here andin an appropriate MSDS.5. Hazards5.1 HealthConsult current OSHA regulations and suppli-ers Material Safety Data Sheets for all materials used in thispractice.5.1.1 Aside from the risk of thermal burns in handli

11、ng BPAwhen molten, and a possibility of dermatitis from impurities,particularly in crude grades, industrial use does not present asignificant health hazard. However, ordinary precautions mustbe observed to protect personnel from contact with moltenBPA or excessive exposure to dusts or high concentra

12、tions ofvapor.5.1.2 Precautions must be observed to protect personnelfrom excessive inhalation of vapors and dust.5.2 Fire:5.2.1 BPA in both the solid and liquid form is combustibleand introduces a potential fire hazard when it is stored,handled, or used.5.2.2 BPA vapors or dust can form explosive m

Protective Equipment6.1 Employees who work with BPA should be well trainedand should maintain safe

16、working conditions. They should berequired to read an appropriate MSDS for BPA in its entiretyand consult appropriate, local, safety personnel if they haveany questions or concerns. Persons handling moltenbisphenol-A need to exercise particular care.7. First Aid7.1 Consult an appropriate MSDS for BP

17、A with regards tofirst aid measures that should be taken. In particular, extremecare must be observed handling molten BPA as it can causesevere thermal burns.8. Safety Precautions8.1 Exercise care to prevent spills and leaks. If they dooccur, only properly protected personnel should remain in thecon

18、taminated area in accordance with the instructions in anappropriate MSDS. All spill-related activities should complywith applicable EPA, OSHA, and local regulations and laws.8.2 Because of fire and dust explosion hazards, do notpermit open flames in the vicinity of tank carriers, othershipping conta

19、iners, or storage tanks. Provide all electricalfixtures with vapor-proof globes and explosion-proof safetydevices. Ground tank carriers by an approved method. Prohibitsmoking. All pneumatic conveying should be done withnitrogen or other inert gas.8.3 Any person sampling or handling these products sh

20、ouldhave consulted an appropriate MSDS for specific first aidinstructions and equipment to have available for use in theevent of personal contact or exposure.8.4 Conduct sampling and handling operations in accor-dance with the instructions in an appropriate MSDS.9. Unloading Hopper Cars or Hopper Tr

21、ucks9.1 Observe all safety precautions as outlined in Section 8and in an appropriate MSDS. Always follow shippers instruc-tions for unloading, and read and observe all caution markingson both sides of the hopper or dome.9.2 Opening of the hopper car dome cover and attachmentof delivery lines should

22、all be done by accepted safetyprocedures.10. Sampling Solid Bisphenol A10.1 Bulk QuantitiesTake a representative sample, pref-erably from a falling BPA stream, using a straight-pathsampler. Adjust sampler feed rate, slot width, cutter speed, andfrequency to collect12-lb (227-g) of sample per 10 000

23、lb(4540 kg) of BPA.10.2 Bags (50 lb (22.7 kg):10.2.1 Using a small thief, 8 to 12 in. (203 to 305 mm),remove about14 lb (113 g) of sample from 1 bag out of every40 bags (2000 lb) (907 kg) of BPA. Take the sample from thefilling ear or, if necessary, by opening one corner of the bag.Place each sample

24、 in a plastic bag. Tightly secure the samplebag to minimize absorption of moisture. Label with properidentification and in accordance with OSHA Regulations, orother appropriate local regulations, or both.10.2.2 Make a composite blend from the individual samplesand mix thoroughly before analyzing.10.

25、2.3 Aluminum, polyethylene, polypropylene, or stainlesssteel-type scoops are recommended for taking samples ofproduct from the bags selected for sampling. Avoid contami-nating the sample with iron or rust.10.3 Extreme care and good judgment are necessary toensure that the samples truly represent the

26、 product.10.4 Remove approximately 75 g portions from each of thebags selected from a sample unit and place in a plastic bag.Seal the opened bags with suitable tape.10.5 Label the sample container in accordance with OSHAor other appropriate local regulations, or both, to indicate, as aminimum, the d

27、ate and time, source of the sample, type ofmaterial, purpose of the sample, and the name of the sample.10.6 Large Bulk Sacks (1100 to 2200 lb (500 to 1000 kg):10.6.1 Use a sample thief to collect12-lb (227-g) samplesfor each 4000 to 5000 lb (1814 to 2268 kg) of material.10.6.2 Place samples in plast
