、Designation: D 5740 03Standard Guide forWriting Material Standards in the Classification D 4000Format1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5740; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revi

、sion. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThis guide has been prepared to aid in the writing of material standards using the ClassificationD 4000 format. The following

The inclusion or exclusion of recycledplastics in this classification system must be addressed here.1.2 The properties included in this standard are thoserequired to identify the compositions covered. Classification4.1 _ materials are classified into groups according totheir compositio

、n. These groups are subdivided into classesand grades as shown in the Basic Property Table (Table _).Anexample of a basic property table can be found in SpecificationD 4066. The property table should contain a footnote referringto Section _ for reference to specimen source and prepara-tion.NOTE 3An

、example of this classification system is given as follows:The designation _ indicates the following:_ = _ as found in Terminology D 1600,_ = _ (group),_ = _ (class), and_ = requirements given Table _ (grade).4.1.1 Reinforced, filled, and lubricated versions of _materials that are found in Table _ ar

、e classified accordingto the reinforcement used and the nominal level, by weightpercent, of the reinforcement. The grade is identified by asingle letter that indicates the filler or reinforcement used andtwo digits, in multiples of 5, that indicate the nominal quantityin percent by weight. Thus, a g

、rade containing 35 % glassreinforcement would be indicated by _ G35. This desig-nation indicates_ = _ as found in Terminology D 1600,_ = _ (group),_ = _ (class), and_ = 35 % glass reinforcement and requirements given Table _ (grade).The reinforcement letter designations and associated tolerance leve

、. The types and percentages of reinforcements and additivesshould be shown on the suppliers technical data sheet unless they areproprietary in nature. If necessary, additional callout of these reinforce-ments and additives can be accomplished by use of the suffix part of thesystem (see Section 5).4.

Asecond letter, from Table 1a, when desired, is used to indicatethe form or structure of the reinforcement and/or filler, but isnot used for functional mixtures. Thus, a letter designation Gfor glass, E for beads or spheres or balls, and 33 for

、percent byweight, GE33, specifies a reinforced or filled material with 33percent by weight in the form of glass beads, spheres, or balls. The reinforcement letter designations and associated tolerancelevels are shown in the previous table. Suffixes5.1 When additional requirements are needed that are notcovered by the basic requirements or cell-table requirements, they shall be indicated through the use of suffixes.5.2 A list of s

、uffixes can be found in Classification SystemD 4000 (Table 3) and may be used for additional requirementsas appropriate. Additional suffixes will be added to thatstandard as test methods and requirements are developed andrequested.6. General Requirements6.1 Basic requirements from the property table

、s or celltables are always in effect unless superseded by specific suffixrequirements, which always take precedence.6.2 The plastics composition shall be uniform and shallconform to the requirements specified herein.7. Detail Requirements7.1 The materials shall conform to the requirements inTables _

、, _, _, and suffix requirements as they apply.7.2 For purposes of determining conformance, all specifiedlimits for a specification (line callout) based on this classifica-tion system are absolute limits, as defined in Practice E 29.7.2.1 With the absolute method, an observed value or acalculated val

、ue is not rounded, but is to be compared directlywith the limiting value. Conformance or nonconformance isbased on this comparison.8. Sampling8.1 Sampling shall be statistically adequate to satisfy therequirements of 12.4.8.2 A batch or lot shall be constituted as a unit of manufac-ture as prepared

、for shipment and may consist of a blend of twoor more “production runs.”9. Specimen Preparation9.1 Indicate the source of the test specimens for the relevanttest methods.9.2 Prepare the specimens by a _ process in accordancewith _. An example is found in Classification SystemD 6779.10. Conditioning1

、0.1 Test specimens shall be conditioned in the standardlaboratory atmosphere in accordance with Procedure A ofPractice D 618 before performing the required tests.NOTE 6If another conditioning procedure is used, replace the previ-ous one.10.2 Conduct those tests influenced by ambient conditionsin the

、 standard laboratory atmosphere of 23 6 2C and 50 65 % relative humidity in accordance with Practice D 618.11. Test Methods11.1 Determine the properties enumerated in this classifica-tion system by means of the test methods referenced in Section2.11.1.1 The number of tests shall be consistent with t

、herequirements of Section 8 and 12.4.12. Inspection and Certification12.1 Inspection and certification of the material suppliedwith reference to a specification based on this classificationsystem shall be for conformance to the requirements specifiedherein.12.2 Lot-acceptance inspection shall be the

、 basis on whichacceptance or rejection of the lot is made. The lot-acceptanceinspection shall consist of:12.2.1 _.12.2.2 _.12.3 Periodic check inspection with reference to a specifi-cation based upon this classification system shall consist of thetests for all requirements of the material under the

、specifica-tion. Inspection frequency shall be adequate to ensure thematerial is certifiable in accordance with 12.4.12.4 Certification shall be that the material was manufac-tured by a process in statistical control, sampled, tested, andinspected in accordance with this classification system, andtha

、t the average values for the lot meet the requirements of thespecification (line callout).12.5 A report of test results shall be furnished when re-quested. The report shall consist of results of the lot-acceptanceinspection for the shipment and the results of the most recentperiodic-check inspection
