Scope1.1 This specification covers the fabrication of new wire-bound general purpose (GP) panelboard (hereafter re

3、ferred toas wirebound boxes) shipping boxes intended for use ascontainers for domestic and overseas shipment of generalmaterials and supplies, not exceeding 500 lb 226.8 kg forclass 1 domestic, 400 lb 181.4 kg for Class 2 overseasshipments or 300 lb 136.0 kg for Class 3 extreme distributionhazard co

4、nditions or military contingency purposes.1.2 Wirebound box performance is dependent on its fabri-cated components; therefore, a variety of types, classes, styles,and treatments reflecting varied performance are specified.This specification does not cover wirebound box performanceunder all atmospher

5、e, handling, shipping, and storage condi-tions. Wirebound boxes in compliance with Hazardous Mate-rial Modal Regulations or United States Code of FederalRegulations (CFRs) are found in the Supplementary Require-ments.1.3 The use of other construction methods or techniques areacceptable and shall be

6、permitted, provided the resultingpackaging systems are of equal or better performance thanwould result from the use of these specified materials andprocedures. The appropriate Practice D 4169 distributioncycle(s) can be used to develop comparative procedures andcriteria.1.4 UnitsThe values stated in

7、 inch-pound units are to beregarded as standard. The SI values given in brackets aremathematical. The values stated in each system are not exactequivalents; therefore, each system must be used indepen-dently of the other. Combining values from the two systemsmay result in non-conformance with the st

8、andard. See IEEE/SI10 for conversion of units.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Classification4.1 Types:4.1.1 Type 1Easy load, one interior container that sup-ports the top, bottom, and sides of the outer wireboundshipping box.4.1.2 T

Materials and Manufacture6.1 MaterialsIt is encouraged that recycled material beused when practical. All recovered, recycled, or virgin mate-rials used in the box manufacture sha

26、ll meet the requirementsof this specification and APA/EWA PSI-95.6.1.1 LumberLumber shall perform to Practice D 6199,Class 2 requirements, for cleats (see 7.3, Group III) for skidssee Specification D 6254/D 6254M. Properties of lumber are inaccordance with Practice D 19906.1.1.1 Plywood PanelRequire

27、ments are found in APAPS195.6.1.1.2 FaceboardsThe material used for the faces of abox. Faceboards shall be as specified (see 7.2):6.1.2 Wires:6.1.2.1 Binding Wire and Staple WireBinding wire shallbe low carbon annealed steel wire and have the propertieslisted in Table 1. Staple wire shall be hard te

28、mpered, lowcarbon steel wire, and have the properties listed in Table 1.6.1.2.2 Wire CoatingsThe surfaces of binding wire andstaple wire for Class 2 and 3 boxes shall be galvanized. Thesurface of binding and staple wires for Class 1 boxes need notbe galvanized. Galvanized coating shall be smooth and

29、 shallnot flake or peel when tested in accordance with SpecificationA 641.6.1.3 Fasteners:6.1.3.1 NailsNails shall be made of steel wire and shallconform to the requirements of Specification F 1667. Nails willbe clinched, cement-coated, or chemical etched to preventpremature withdrawal.6.1.3.2 Stapl

30、es or Wire StitchesStaples or wire stitchesshall be made of steel wire not less than 0.0625 in. 2 mm andcomply with Specification F 1667.6.1.4 Wood Preservative, Water RepellentWater repellentpreservative shall be composed of either a 2 % copper naph-thenate, a 3 % zinc naphthenate, or a 1.8 % oxine

31、 copper(formerly referred to as copper-8-quinolinolate) solution.7. Construction7.1 DimensionsBoxes shall be furnished having the di-mensions as specified (see 5.1.3). Dimensions of boxes aremeasured between the inside surfaces of the faceboards, andcalculated to the nearest18 in. 3 mm, the preferre

The thickness of thefaceboard can be determined

34、by selecting the appropriateinformation from Tables 2 and 3. Weight of box contents, typeof load and the groups of wood based on box class determinethe appropriate faceboard.7.2.1 Grain of FaceboardsEnd faceboards for Styles 1and 2 boxes shall be placed with the grain horizontal, exceptthat when hor

35、izontal battens are used in end panels, the grainof the faceboards shall be vertical. End faceboards for Style 3boxes shall be placed with the grain vertical. Thedirection of grain of the ply to which the end wire is stitchedshall be vertical.7.3 CleatsCleats are pieces of lumber which form theframework of the box and to which faceboards of the top,bottom, and sides are stapled. Cleats shall be made from woodspecifi

38、ed in Practice D 6199.The cleats shall be made of Group2, 3, or 4 woods only. Each cleat shall be single piece of woodwithout joints. Cleats shall be made with mitered ends or withmortised and tenoned ends tongue- and groove. Dimensionsshall be actual dimensions, 1132 in. 9 mm. Edge cleats of allsty

39、les of boxes shall be1316 in. 21 mm wide and78 in. 22mm in thickness for boxes having weight of contents up to 300lb 136 kg. Boxes having weight of contents from 300 to 500lb 136 to 227 kg edge cleats shall be 118 in. 29 mm wideand 118 in. 29 mm in thickness, except that HVB or HVBWend patterns are

40、used (see Fig. 2), edge cleats shall be1316 in.21 mm wide and78 in. 22 mm in thickness.7.3.1 Intermediate CleatsBoxes for Types 2 and 3 loads,having greater between-cleat dimensions than specified inTable 4, shall be reinforced with one or more rows ofintermediate cleats, except as below. Rows of in

41、termediatecleats are not required on boxes for Type 1 loads. The distancebetween adjacent rows of cleats shall not exceed the distanceindicated in Table 5. In special designs for Types 2 and 3 loads,where required, size and location of intermediate cleats shall bespecified (see 5.1.4) If the use of

42、intermediate cleats may beomitted but the thickness of faceboards shall be increased tothe thickness specified for the between cleat dimension indi-cated in Table 5.7.3.2 Cleat SizesUnless otherwise specified in the con-tract or purchase order (see 5.1.9), any of the sizes of cleatsshown in Table 6

43、shall be used for intermediate rows. No partof any intermediate cleat shall be more than132 in. 1 mm lessthan the dimension shown inTable 6, for dimensions exceeding1316 in. 21 mm or116 in. 2 mm less than the dimensionsexceeding1316 in. 21 mm.7.4 BattensA batten is a wooden board to which the endfac

44、eboard is nailed or stapled.Abatten is a reinforcement usedonly on the ends of the wirebound container. Battens shall beattached to the outside face of the end faceboard and may bepositioned horizontal, vertical, or both horizontal and vertical.Battens made for Group 1 woods shall be not less than 1

45、34 in.45 mm wide and those made from Groups 2, 3, and 4 woodsshall be not less than 138 in. 35 mm wide. Battens shall be thesame thickness as the cleats on the boxes.
