、for Emulsified Refined Coal Tar (Min-eral Colloid Type)43. Terminology3.1 The refined coal tar emulsion mixed at the contractorsyard or at the job site shall meet the requirements of Specifi-cation D 5727. Mixture Types I and II (see Appendix A ofPractice D 3423 for standard definition of terms) are
、 describedbelow:3.1.1 Type I materiala mixture of refined coal tar emul-sion meeting Specification D 5727, water, and aggregate.3.1.2 Type II materiala mixture of refined coal tar emul-sion meeting Specification D 5727, water, aggregate, andadditive.4. Classification4.1 This specification is designe
、d to give specifying authori-ties the information necessary to ensure that the appropriatebase refined coal tar emulsion mixtures are specified forprotecting bituminous concrete pavements where fuel resis-tance is required.4.2 Normal aggregate loadings for Type I materials shouldrange from 0.360 to
、0.600 kg/L (3 to 5 lb/gal). Type II materialscan have slightly higher loadings of aggregate; however, aggregate loadings in excess of 0.720 kg/L (6 lb/gal) arestrongly discouraged.NOTE 1Several researchers have shown that high aggregate loadingsresult in a lack of fuel resistance as determined by the
、 Resistance toKerosene test according to Test Methods D 2939. Poor adhesion may alsooccur with high sand loadings.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 Base Refined Coal Tar EmulsionThis emulsion shallbe made using binders prepared from a high temperaturerefined coal tar conforming to the requirements of
、SpecificationD 490 for RT11 or higher. The use of oil and water gas tar isnot allowed. The base refined coal tar emulsion shall be inaccordance with all requirements of Specification D 5727.5.2 AggregateThe aggregate shall be either a natural ormanufactured (boiler slag has been used successfully) a

(Boiler slag has been usedsuccessfully.)NOTE 2It is recommended that this aggregate meet the gradationgiven in Table 1, when tested in accordance
、 with Test Method C 136.5.3 AdditiveIn the case of Type II material, the additiveshall be approved by the base refined coal tar emulsionmanufacturer.6. Performance Requirements6.1 Type I CompositionThe refined coal tar emulsion sealcoat shall consist of a mixture of refined coal tar emulsion, water,
