1、Designation: E2187 09An American National StandardStandard Test Method forMeasuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E2187; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the

2、year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThe most common initiating event in a fatal fire in the United States is the dropping of a lit cigaretteonto a

3、 bed or piece of upholstered furniture. The cigarette coal heats the furnishing materials to thepoint where smoldering combustion begins, perhaps followed by a transition to flaming combustion.Since limiting the frequency of ignitions is a principal approach to reducing fire loss, it is desirableto

4、establish a test method for the propensity of a cigarette to ignite soft furnishings. This test methoduses standard substrates to determine the extent to which, as the substrate draws heat from thecigarette, the cigarette combustion remains strong enough to be capable of initiating a fire.1. Scope1.

5、1 This fire-test-response standard provides a standardmeasure of the capability of a cigarette, positioned on one ofthree standard substrates, to generate sufficient heat to continueburning and thus potentially cause ignition of bedding orupholstered furniture.1.2 This method has value as a predicto

6、r of the relativepropensity of a cigarette to ignite upholstered furnishings.1.3 This method is applicable to cigarettes that burn alongthe length of a tobacco column.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.5 This

7、 standard is used to measure and describe theresponse of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flameunder controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporateall factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of thematerials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditio

8、ns.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specifi

Federal Standard 16CFR Part 1632, Standard for the Flammability of Mattressesand Mattress Pads, was promulgated to reduce the likelihoodthat mattresses and mattress pads would ignite from a lightedcigarette.5.2 This test method enables comparison of the relativeignition st

If different conditions are substituted orthe end use conditions are changed, it may not be possible, using this test, to predict quantitative changes in the fire testresponse ch

Hazards6.1 This test method involves the use of combustible mate-rials that are exposed to ignition sources. Consequently, theuser shall take proper precautio

Three or four legsshall raise the bottom of the holder approximately 20 mm (0.80in.) above the chamber floor.NOTE 1The outer diameter of the metal rim is not to exceed the innerdiameter of the recess in the filter paper holder.7.5 Metal Ri

Apair of parallel metal pins, each approximately 1 mm indiameter and 8.1 6 0.05 mm (0.32 6 0.02 in.) apart, shallprotrude 17 6 4 mm (0.65 6 0.15 in.) toward the center of therim. The pins are to be spaced to keep the non-ignited end ofa conventiona

Calibration and Standardization8.1 Calibrations of equipment shall be carried out as notedbelow and at any time when equipment or test conditionsindicate that evaluation and re-calibration

Thetime intervals for calibrations stated in this method shall beconsidered to be the minimum.8.1.1 The test chambers shall be checked before use tominimize air leakage so that the smoke plume from a cigaretterises undisturbed during testing. Door seals shall be checkedvisually to ens

If turbulence is noted, then (a) the test chamber shall be checked for leaks, (b) the testchamber locations shall be evaluated for excess a

46、At least every 30 days of active testing, the laboratoryshall verify the performance of the total test system andoperator using a test cigarette whose ignition propensity usingASTM E2187 has been established.NOTE 2Standard Reference Material 1082, a standardized cigaretteobtainable from the National

47、 Institute of Standards and Technology, hasbeen widely used for this purpose. This information is provided for theconvenience of users of this standard and does not constitute an endorse-ment by ASTM.9. Test Specimens and Standard Substrate Assemblies9.1 Cigarette test specimens and filter paper sub

The sheets of filter paper shall notbe handled in the vicinity where the cigarette will contact thepaper during a test. In all cases, the ma

49、terials shall be handledwith dry hands only.NOTE 3The use of clean, dry, non-powdered surgical gloves canmitigate incidental contamination of the test materials while maintainingoperator dexterity.9.2 Cigarettes:9.2.1 Cigarette test specimens shall be protected fromphysical or environmental damage while in handling andstorage. It is important that the specimens not be crushed ordeformed in any manner. Measures shall be taken to ensure thatthe specimens are not contaminated while in storage and theyshall be protected from degradation by insects. If the speci-mens
